Waitlisted....

Tennessee is certainly a top choice for me... Anyone have a clue what the chances are on UTK's waitlist?

Waitlisted today. Unless I get in from the waitlist by early April, I'm afraid Tennessee is out for me. Bummed.

I've been pretty bummed about my WL, too. I applied to a lot of schools this cycle, but knowing I am unlikely to pay anything less than sticker, it's pretty much UT or nothing (unless by some miracle I get into Vandy). I'm going to try to get off the WL, but I'm already starting to plan an LSAT retake.

Anyone know how well UT is received in the southeast in general? I know its a famous SEC school but I'm wondering if employers welcome UT resumes.

I think UT is well regarded in the region. Being a SEC sports powerhouse helps a lot with rep and it has a huge loyal alumni base.

Yeah I'll stay on the waitlist until April 15, but if I don't hear back, its gonna be FSU or UK.

I am far from a well-informed source on the matter, but I know UT owns TN and places in Atlanta (don't know if I would say they place "well," but they send at least SOME grads to ATL each year). The promo materials they hand out to prospective students (http://www.law.utk.edu/administration/careers/LawEmpGuide.pdf) would suggest they do a decent job placing grads in states that border TN as well, particularly AL and West NC. There are other states represented (TX, CA, NY, DC, LA, MN), but I doubt you can rely on a UT degree alone getting you there.

If you want Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville or Chattanooga, UT is probably your best bet. They are sort of the de facto #1 LS in TN since most Vandy grads leave the state (something like 2/3 I believe). This isn't to say an employer would necessarily take a UT grad over a Vandy grad, but UT has a HUGE in-state alumni network. I would say that almost every single firm in TN is >50% UT grads, even Big Law (look at Bass, Berry & Sims web site if you don't believe me).

EDIT: One thing about the South, which might help UT's degree travel farther, that you don't find as much in the Midwest and West Coast is that most of the important cities are geographically close. Birmingham, Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Columbia, Huntsville (AL) and Greenville (SC) are all within ~500 miles of each other. I'm not sure how much that affects UT's portability, but it certainly can't hurt.

I would disagree with you with respect to memphis. The memphis legal community is generally incredibly supportive of University of Memphis graduates. For the rest of tennessee, you're spot on, but not really for memphis. That's not to say that a UTK law degree isn't going to get you a job in memphis, but you're not at an advantage relative to a UofM grad.

Well, every state/city is going to give preference to it's own local school. raider was just saying that a UT degree has some clout in those places, not that it's going to dominate those markets.

;) Oh, gotcha.

Well, unless you're into defending/prosecuting violent criminals, who would want to practice in Memp, anyway?

Has anyone gotten financial aid yet? I'm not holding my breath for a scholarship (3.5/161), but I'd sure like to get the full aid package in my hands.

For those who have been WLd, are you sending something in addition to the form that they provide you, or do you think that is sufficient for a LOCI?

I called the Admissions office today to ask some questions about coming off the WL, and I thought I'd share some info with my fellow WLers.

-Last year, UT didn't admit any students from the WL. However, I was told that last year they did admissions differently and there were four categories of decision (Admit, "Hold," Wait List, Deny), instead of this year's three (Admit, Wait List, Deny).
-UT typically admits anywhere from 3-25 students from the wait list each year, but it's been a long time since they've approached the high end of that range.
-As has been mentioned in many other threads/websites, LS applications are down this year. The woman I talked to said last year UT received about 1500 apps, but this year it's more like 1200.
-Taking the June LSAT, sending in LOCI or additional LOR won't necessarily increase your chances of admission, but they won't hurt them either (I figure this is based on the assumption that you don't do worse on the LSAT). I get the impression that for the most part it will depend on how you fit into class diversity. If they have a lot of in-state admits go elsewhere, in-state candidates should have a better shot, that sorta thing.
-One factor the woman I talked to seemed to view as a pretty big wild card was this year's scholarships. She said they have less money for scholarships this year than they did last cycle, so she expects there might be a lower yield for this class due to students who expect scholarships not receiving them and therefore not attending.

I'm pretty adamant about getting off the WL, so look out jaymaynard, bless, clemson09 and EricBerry.

For what it's worth, I was waitlisted last year with a 3.45/160. I retested, got a 161, and was admitted in November (about a month after I submitted). If you want to be at Uat, they recognize it.

Good luck!
