I asked one of the people in the admissions office and she said that they say 2 is acceptable. My specific questions was for clarification since the application recommends 3 but the LSAC LOR Required / Recommended / Accepted recommends 1. She told me either 2 or 3 is fine but you really only need the third if it provides another perspective like from an employer while the other two are academic.
Excellent,thank you.

Got a rejection letter today in the mail. Not even a waitlist offer with 169/3.93/Engineering UG? Whatever, Michigan.

This is not good news for someone with similar numbers but a worse GPA. Michigan, don't reject me on my birthday.

Sorry peter618 :( your numbers are solidly above average, something else must be up.

Everyone else: I wouldn't necessarily worry about being dinged if you have similar numbers, they have admitted much lower numbers even at later in the cycle.

Wrote a diversity statement about how my engineering UG sets me apart. Hopefully all of you who wrote "Why Michigan?" essays will have better luck. I'm just glad I didn't suck their dick by doing so and then get the same rejection...!

Despite the focus on numbers there remains a black box/mystery aspect to some admissions decisions. Best of luck with your other schools.

Not sure what else could have been up...but I am starting to wonder. I submitted around 15 apps in early November and have only heard back from Georgetown (in), WUSTL (in), Vandy (in), Florida (in), and now UMich (out). My PS was a little heavy (took a little more philosophical approach, not your typical "this is my story" narrative), but I got positive feedback from everybody who read it. Also had 3 solid LORs.

Well congratulations in advance. I'm sure you'll get the full amount.

She is SO nice on the phone, too. You could tell she was truly excited to be calling.
I was finally able to talk to her. Full Darrow!
