Darn, I just realized I never even got a complete email, and they'd received the application on 11/2. Wonder what happened?

Hahaha- thin crust, deep dish, it's all delicious. LA better have some good pizza or I'll be super sad. (I'm pretty sure I'm actually lactose intolerant, but that hasn't affected my cheese intake at all. And it never will.)

Where are you from if you don't mind me asking (at least the state)? I ask because I feel like you can always find awesome pizza around here (NJ/NY area). I would go so far as to say that it's better than a lot of the pizza I had straight in Italy (which makes sense because I don't really like any of the pizza styles in northern Italy) and there's a huge history of southern Italian immigration around here. I will say though, nothing in the WORLD is as good a real napoletana pizza. Honestly, if I had the option to have a financially stable career and live in Naples (and somehow not fear for my life from all the unbelievable crime levels), I would give up full rides to all of YHS in a heartbeat.

Haha, you guessed right - I'm from the NJ/NY area. Our pizza is amazing, isn't it. I'm down South now for UG and it's just... it's just not the same. So I gorge myself on pizza and (REAL) bagels whenever I'm home.

I love how all my contributions on this thread are food-related. Cheers to derailing this thread.

Ok, I don't mean to be obnoxious 'west coast' guy, but what makes the pizza so good? I understand that its much better in NY/NJ, but why? I grew up in California where pizza is just.....pizza. And just to try to keep this thread from dragging too far away from UCLA, I guess I'd consider Enzo's in Westwood to be "good" pizza, thoughts from people who have tried it?

Enzo's in Westwood is money. Nice after a night of shameless inebriation. Better than LaMonica's IMO.

eh Enzos has been slacking of late. It was good a few years back, but last time I went I picked up a slice a pizza... and all the cheese and toppings fell off. Too greasy. BJs may be corporate, but it's still better.

Well I would maintain that a lot of it is, like I said, the huge southern Italian immigrant history. Not to say that there aren't any Italians in LA (not that I've ever been to Cali), but there's obviously a big influence over here where the standards for the quality of sauce, cheese, and dough are just that much higher. There's of course bad pizza wherever you go, but you KNOW what places to avoid around here because they're usually the exceptions. I'm not really sure how to describe it other than that, but you should come on a culinary tour around the area and see for yourself. :)
And it would be quite interesting (albeit silly) to rank your preference of schools by how good the pizza in the area is. Although CLS/NYU would remain #1 IMO, although apparently Seattle has a lot of verace pizza napoletana-certified pizzerias... UWashington anyone?

Yeah, definitely the Italians. I'm from the Jersey Shore, and I have slowly learned that little guidos grow up to be excellent pizza makers. I've also heard that the NJ/NY water has something weird about it that makes the dough bond in an especially delicious way.

I'm 100% sure that there's excellent pizza to be found in LA, though. Even if the water isn't right.

Man... I'm really hungry now.

Haha yeah I'm from about 40 minutes west of NYC so definitely in a pizza hotspot. And yes everyone, I do live near Elizabeth/Seacaucus and yes, they're dirty as hell, but that's not the entire state!

If I get into UCLA I will have to try this Enzo's place at an ASW.

Last time I had it was '09 when I graduated so I cannot attest to its quality currently. BJ's deep dish is bomb, but they shouldn't even be compared. Diff pizzas entirely, IMO. For all of you who get into UCLA, go grab pizza in Westwood Village, then you must hit up DIDDY RIESE for dessert. The line will be daunting at night, but it will be well worth it. Definitely a must at UCLA.

If you are ever in Westwood you need to go to Angelino's on Kinross Ave and Westwood. It is by far my favorite Italian trattoria in Los Angeles, and I lived in in Italy for several months. This is the real deal. Just make sure Archie the owner is cooking, not his lame ass assistant.

Enzo's is meh, worth trying though. Diddy Reese is trademark UCLA. And $1.50's too.

if I get into UCLA, I won't be in the mood for pizza. I'll be in the mood for Lawry's.

Just to clear the air, NY has good pizza because of the water, which helps the dough in some way. However, what makes the water superior is the bugs that live in it. I sure as hell don't care though. I love me some NY pizza!

Gotta love the tiny shrimp floating around NYC drinking water (which has recently sparked a debate on whether the water is kosher). Either way it makes for really good pizza.

Haha it's me, they called me 45 minutes ago. I was really surprised because it was after 7 PM in LA. I saw the number from the 310 area code and it was Dean Schwartz.

Thanks! Yeah the timing was really weird, I saw the area code but a lot of people from LA go here and I thought maybe it was someone from a class needing some last minute notes for a final or something. Haha
