I remember some posts earlier about people getting calls after 5pm Pacific. Does anyone remember what the latest reported call time was around?

3.77 and 169 + 2 MAs and a PhD this year.

Thanks! Congrats, I'm very jealous.

Wtf, why do I get no moneys but you get $75,000 a year? The PhD? The extra .02 and +1 on the lsat? that's the difference between 0 and $25k a year?

:?

I'm hoping they pull through with need based aid...

Eh, I didn't get any $ despite growing up an hour away from UCLA, and having both numbers above their 75th's, and being a mid-October applicant :|.

Yah, see, that's the stuff that confuses me. Gotta figure it's luring OOS and relocation costs, but then, I'm OOS and have high relocation costs. Oh well, I'm banking on need/merit combo aid.

You got nothing to lose since you will not go to UCLA sticker. I think you should drive over there and demand merit $. Nicely of course. :)

No, nothing extra at all formally. I did reply to their philosophy program email that was sent a few days ago with how interested in it I was.

Wait: are you referring to the essay-option in the application itself? (i.e., not an additional essay written in Word and uploaded on LSAC, but rather an essay written directly into the application-doc itself? - yes I know one could write those in Word and upload them too, but you know what I mean)

If so, then yes, I did. I talked about my interest in their Law and Philosophy program which I am, in fact, very excited about. Also replied to their Law and Phil program auto-email.

I didn't get an email about that.

I did not write the supplement essay either, to my recollection. I, too, study Philosophy though, and half filled out the PhD application before I decided I didn't have time to take the GRE. The full funding is so, so tempting though...

In via phone call from Dean Schwartz this afternoon (about 2 hours ago). Came w/ a good chunka $ as well. Definitely a bit surprising, since I've heard the UC's tend to prefer applicants from other states.

Partly that (though both MA's are in philosophy). Actually the thing that got me looking into law school in the first place is just the fact that the philo teaching market is reallyreallyreally bad right now and has been for a while. So I started looking into alternatives and found law school / law teaching, which dovetails really with my philo research interests. Most of the "big names" in my areas of research are law professors even. So I figured law school would be a good way to keep going in my areas of interest while opening up a few additional job possibilities down the road.

Also in, also no money. Nevertheless excited! UCLA is my alma matter and most of my friends are in Los Angeles. Wouldn't mind returning!

Seems like they really prefer the Philosophers!

I've been wondering if law school concentration matters for career prospects... if I go to UCLA and focus on Philosophy and Law, will I then be un-hire-able?

They do seem to, at least today! (Not a lot of days when one get's to say "It's a good day to be a philosopher.") Not sure about the career prospects issue exactly. The TLS write-up on UCLA had an interesting quasi-relevant passage:

"Finally, for aspiring academics, UCLA isn’t a bad choice either. The Dean is working actively to increase the number of people going into academic careers and is expecting “real returns.” The school just recently started a Law and Philosophy department, and wants to further expand with a Law and Economics department as well as a Law and Sociology department."

This seems to be implying that the Law and Philo specialization is meant to enhance academic career prospects. But it seems hard to say whether a prospective (non-academic) employer would look upon you less-favorably for having it on your degree. I suppose it depends on what you want to do, and on whether other people going into your field have other, more pertinent, specializations that you don't have because you were busy mucking around with that crazy philo stuff. Might be something to talk to the career services people about though, since they might have some insight on what employers in various fields are looking for.

They sure do. I wrote that program essay on the philosophy specialization. What will it do for career prospects? Nothing. But I really like philosophy, lol.
