Two! TWO law schools have send me admissions emails AND gotten packets/letters to me in the time since NYU said "Decision Letter Sent."

I think I read somewhere they'll have invites out by the end of February? I got the impression they wanted the interviews to take place during one of the ASW sessions.

Bed-Stuy is like 45 minutes, probably leave an hour to be safe, Williamsburg in can be done in half an hour but its better to leave at least 45 to be safe and because getting on the L at Bedford in the morning can be impossible.

You also want to make sure you get as good a sense as possible of the character of the specific neighborhoods you are considering in Brooklyn (i.e., make sure you'd feel comfortable walking around late at night alone, etc.) Those who know Brooklyn better than I can speak to this, but at least be aware. Generally speaking, that won't be a concern for most of the places you find in Manhattan. As long as you're happy to share, I'd check out craigslist "rooms/shared" and in the search field type stuff like "grad student" or "law student." You'll find that a lot of people are grad students that want other students as roommates, etc.

Of course, the problem w/this approach is that you have to be willing to secure your housing within, say, the two months before you start school, but since a lot of students are looking for roommates to start at the beginning of the semester, might not be a big deal.

Less than $800? That's kind of tough.

You could live for pretty cheap up in Washington Heights (that's north of Columbia) and take the A, which would get you down to Washington Square in only a few stops.

And, obviously, the morning rush is also something you have to take into account.

Ie. The Lexington Ave lines (4-5-6) suck ass with their delays.

It's not so much the distance as the subway line -- the L is notoriously bad. If you can find something on say the F that would be a good deal. Carroll Gardens can SOMETIMES have room shares at around 800 but its getting pretty pricey. Maybe Red Hook? Though that is gentrifying slowly too... but it's on the NR as well as the F which is much more convenient than waiting endlessly for the L.

I would definitely look in Brooklyn. You might get ridiculously lucky and find something non-terrifying in lower Manhattan for less than 800 a month, but I wouldn't lay money on it it.

Also Jersey City (within walking distance of Exchange Place is best, but it's $) or Hoboken. Not to say either is cheap, but the commute is easy and it's less expensive than most of your options in Manhattan.

I think Bed-Stuy wouldn't be too bad if you could get the A - at peak times, it might even take you less than 45 minutes to get to West 4th. You might also be able to find something for that much in South Park Slope/Windsor Terrace/Ditmas Park/etc. You might have to settle for a place that's not off a train that stops at West 4th (2/3/4/5 from Crown Heights), but it's pretty easy to get close. Looking for apartments in Brooklyn on Craigslist is a nightmare, because there are a lot of scammy posts, but it's just what you have to do. I definitely recommend looking in rooms and shares - easier to avoid sketchy roommates than sketchy landlords.

Well, it's a bit of a ride by subway, and off-peak service is going to be more of a hassle than you might like. But I think the main thing is that there's just not that much going on up there (not a lot of great restaurants, bars, etc.) This is why a lot of people would prefer Brooklyn for similar commute time (and cost, depending on neighborhood). That said, there are a lot of nice apartments in Wash Heights close to the 1 or A that are reasonably priced. I think a lot of it depends on personality...when you come for ASW, try to visit some of these neighborhoods to get a feel.

It's funny that New Yorkers describe it to non-New Yorkers as a part of the city where nothing's going on. You have to understand where some of us are living now. We're definitely talking about a relative quantity.

Yes. I've lived off the A in Brooklyn and Washington Heights, and unless you need to be in upper Manhattan (e.g., Columbia), Brooklyn's a better choice for my money. More aesthetically pleasing (brownstones), closer to fun things to do. I feel like people are often inclined to live in Washington Heights rather than Brooklyn because they really want to live in Manhattan, but it's so different from living on the Upper West Side or in the Village.

Hopefully all of this know-it-all behavior will not hurt my getting-into-NYU karma! Oh please!

This is what intimidates me about looking in Brooklyn--the obviously good neighborhoods are $, and I feel like you have to have a good feel of the neighborhood down to level of several blocks if you're looking in Bed-Stuy/E. Williamsburg. Thoughts from Brooklynites? I live in NJ (hour commute to NYU), but I obviously want to be closer for school, and Brooklyn is a top option.

If you can find something close to any train stop, the safer you will be, especially in neighborhoods like Bed Stuy or East Williamsburg BUSHWICK. (Sorry, pet peeve. East Williamsburg does not exist).

I have a lot of friends in Crown Heights, for example, which can get SUPER shady in some parts, but they are all essentially sitting right on top of the 2/3 stop so they are in a fairly gentrified/Hasidic neighborhood, and I've been to and from there plenty of times and felt fine.
