Umm I wasn't grading anything. I just found it funny that you were complaining about terrible writing, then you make two errors in like three sentences. Also: if you have to triple-check your writing to avoid comma splices, then you probably should not be grading anyone's writing.

Edit: Actually, no, I'll keep writing in simple conversational style. I'll take the loss in exchange for the comfort of not worrying about it.
The correct response would have been this...

No. People do not use conjunctions every time they combine two independent clauses in normal everyday speech. CMC (computer-mediated communication) has been shown to have more in common with speech patterns than with standard writing requirements. Just be glad I capitalize. But you're right, I made several "mistakes" for which I would penalize my students, depending on the focus of the class. Thanks for pointing it out.

Removed "douchiness".

My bad.

I had to look up what comma splices were. Apparently I got through all of UG with hundreds of pages of writing without any professor mentioning it to me. I used them all the time.

Edit: Nevermind. I don't think I did.

What's, a comma splice?

This (from my first post that started this mess): Sorry to be snippy, I'm grading some terrible writing right now.

complete clause, complete cause (no conjunction combining them). It's the kind of thing that only English teachers, survivors of Catholic schools, and international students really should know about. Now that that's clarified.... back to important stuff. Like me getting rejected by NYU for comma splices in my PS

Edit: and getting the feeling that previous poster knows very well what a comma splice is... facetiousness, ftw.

Is there anyone else out there who submitted relatively early who is still processing? I'm starting to wonder if I made a mistake on my application. ( Current Status: Application being processed, Current Status Date: 9/15/2010, RD)

Just walked by the NYU Law Library and the entire ground-level floor was full of people busy studying (or at least looking like they were).

I'm in the Financial District, but at a non-profit. Hopefully when I graduate I'll be back down here...working for a different non-profit.

I'm at a non-profit now too, and want to do PI in some capacity, whether it's back to the non-profit world or into government work. Did you ED?

I did not. I'm hoping I can squeak in with my low GPA (~ 25th percentile) and high LSAT (~ 75th percentile). NYU is my top choice, but I want to be able to consider scholly offers from Michigan and Penn.

Ugh, I mean I work in Times Square. When it's nice, I wake up early and walk all the way from Greenwich Village to TS. But the subway is also right by NYU law school.

UR: 11/11

LSAT @ 25, GPA @ 75

Surprised I went UR so quickly, especially if they do a #s screen.
