potentially stupid question, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere...

I was just glancing at the other Columbia "holds" on LSN and trying to determine how my index stacks up. Up until this point, I knew the index had something to do with the combined weight of LSAT and GPA based on the school's past admissions data, and I just assumed that it was the same score that LSP spits out under "score" when you plug in your numbers (since mine seemed right in range).

So first off - is that right? Is that where you're all getting your index? (Or do you all just happen to know the magic formula?)

And secondly - I noticed that although the first person whose numbers I plugged in had a lower LSP "score" (and lower % at/below) than me, he/she was nonetheless given a "strong consider" at Columbia (and a "weak consider" at yale), while I only had a "consider" at columbia (and "deny" at yale). ...anybody know what the deal is there?

Just got a fee wavier for CLS. Have a 3.9, 163 and URM(PR). Do you think my chances at getting admitted warrant the $12 this late in the cycle, or am I just paying $12 to increase their selectivity rating?

I think you have a decent shot. It seems like at this point in the cycle they're not quite sure what to do with URMs, so I think a lot of those decisions are still there to be made and a 3.9/160 URM has already been accepted (according to LSN) this cycle. Nothing's guaranteed or even likely, but unless the $12 is way out there then I would go for it.

To be fair, I believe that 3.9/160 is a top 5 Ivy grad (trying not to out someone completely), so that might be important to note in order to stay grounded. However, I agree 110% to spend the $12.

This. Only a select few have been chosen. The rest of us have been held, waitlisted, or forgotten with no pattern in the numbers. And it seems that a lot of URMs have been reporting fee waivers. Apparently they're not satisfied with what they already have. :(

1) It's also on the law school report that LSAC sends to the school.

2) Might have something to do with splitter/non-splitter status. Two people with the same index, but one with a much higher LSAT and lower GPA (a splitter) and the other about even for both, may have different chances at certain schools.

Instead of rolling admissions, this has really become like college admissions at the Ivies where you find out April 1st if you got in, regardless of when you applied!

Ahhh sorry gatorgirl. :( Or maybe it's a good thing since at this point we can't tell whether it's better to have been forgotten or held.

3.7/177/AA male and held as well. If you are serious about CLS I suggest you write them a tailored PS about your interest in that school in particular.

But they're barely letting in any URMs this cycle. I'm confused by all of this but especially by their URM strategy. Even if they are suddenly worried about their yield because of the Rubensteins, they've been holding sooooo many people. And sending out more fee waivers to a bunch of URMs.
