Hey everyone. Joining the group pretty late in the game (Columbia just confirmed I went complete this morning).

Some posts above discussed an index that's calculated based on GPA / LSAT. I was wondering what's considered a competitive index number.

Also, on a related point, this index number is the number you find next to your LSAT score on the LSAC report sent to each school correct?

before we get out of hand, index number is a number used to "index" files. Your LSAT/GPA is still going to be doing the talking. So don't get too hung up on the index number which is just a derivative of the numbers that make all the difference - so just go back to comparing the real numbers.

This certainly makes a lot of sense considering some schools may wish to weight one number over the other.

Depends on your LSAT/GPA that make the 4.5 ... read above.

Well how high can the index number go? I'm trying to figure out how to calculate it with my fall grades added in...

Ummm. It's an "index" number, not a "decision" number. Indexing means sorting the files. I really don't think they make decisions based on the index alone... they will look at your LSAT and then your GPA, so what difference does it make how how it goes?

I just assumed the index number must be some way of comparing very similar scores. The bigger the better

I assume they first compare the LSAT, then compare the GPA if the LSAT is the same.

Assume nothing, trust no one. This is a really, really bad thread to read when you have a nasty case of the flu.

Hamilton or Stanford?
What would you do? Not that I'm presumptuous enough to think this will happen to me, but I've been considering the possibility.

Hamilton definitely. Basically a debt free education from a T4? Can't beat that.

I'd take Hamilton over Yale, too (assuming Yale was near sticker.) It would take a decent amount of need-based aid to complicate things, for me at least.

I wouldn't, but I suppose it depends on what you want to do after Law School.

awahoya wrote:Question about the index: If you have two LSAT scores, a reason for the lower one, and they choose to take the higher one, will they recalculate your index for you? On my LSAC report it's the average index...but I added an addendum and they request the add. for score leaps as big as I had...

As R6 stated my understanding (from what I've picked up here - could be wrong) is that the index is not determinative of the decision its just a way to roughly group files which they then review. It also serves as a rough indicator for applicants obsessing about their chances... Generally good index number is good.

I'm not trying to suggest they are being "holistic" or anything crazy like that - just that they look at your actual scores and GPA. For the record they told me and others over the phone if the score gap is 6+ points they emphasize the higher even w/out an addendum. I hope thats true because in that case I have a 4.5...otherwise, quite a bit lower.

TBH, a CCN full-ride is almost always a better choice than any of HYS from an immediate financial standpoint.

But HYS types are more often than not the type that arent really prioritizing the immediate financial benefits of the degree.

Word. I had a major stomach bug when we first started doing vomit-based LOLcats. UNpleasant.

Also, everyone talking about CCN schollys vs. HYS sticker is depressing me! Can we go back to just stressing about our index numbers (sorry philly!)?
