Happy to help! I ran a very quick Martindale search of UF Law grads in Texas and it came back with 175 attorneys. And, as I mentioned, most attorneys don't show up on Martindale searches. In the one minute I looked at the results, I saw many of the top TX firms were well-represented, including Haynes & Boone, Andrews Kurth, etc. You can also search by the amount of years in practice, which should give you an idea of what cities and firms young UF Law grads are going to in Texas. You can try the search here: http://www.martindale.com/Find-Lawyers- ... Firms.aspxthewarflamingo wrote:You just made my day with this post!LevinAlum wrote:Going from UF Law immediately to TX is very doable--I know a number of people from my class that did just that (most of whom came to UF Law from Texas). Do a Martindale Hubbell search of UF Law grads in Texas and you'll see that there's quite a few (even though the Martindale search misses about 80% of practicing attorneys).thewarflamingo wrote: I definitely plan to try to come back to TX right out of school, but I think my problem is that I'll be applying for FL residency so I think I pretty much have to work in FL during the summers or at least 1L summer to show that I'm committed to FL, right? If that's the case, it will make things a little harder for me to get back to TX initially, but I'm fine with working in FL for 5-7 years and then moving back to TX eventually. Who knows, I may end up falling in love with FL again, although the heat and humidity are way too much for me to handle sometimes.

Don't underestimate how liberating that is. Even if you're struggling to find a job in other parts of FL (or outside of FL) after graduating from a place like Stetson, it's much less stressful with absolutely no debt than the average law student (such as at UF) that is 50k-100k in debt and also trying to find a job to survive.Barbie wrote:

I really shouldn't have visited Illinois in January! haha I almost DIED! I'm sad we will probably not end up in the same place though No running buddy!
At the same time, why are you going to law school? If you're looking for a posh "biglaw" job, then the calculus above might change. But to be fair, if you're looking for one of those jobs at any of those schools, you're going to have a hard time landing one of those jobs. The economy is brutal out there, and the FL legal market will probably be tough for quite a few years.
If we could both get exactly what we want-- he would stay in Tampa/St. Pete until he retires then move somewhere like North Carolina for his silver years. I would like to move somewhere like north Georgia (where I'm from) or North Carolina now. I don't really like Florida as a place to live when I'm done with school because I would never want to raise a family here (and if I did have to, I would never EVER allow my children to attend public schools in Florida for any grade level, which would add $$$).
I WANT to go to UF! But its looking like my husband won't be able to get a good job there-- which means my debt goes from the 60k I'd pay in tuition to... between 80-100k! We know he can get a good job here because he has a lot of connection and works here now. I'm scared that I'd be making the wrong choice for my family if I go to UF and rack up a bunch of debt to work in... preferably Tampa if I had to stay in Florida. I feel like if I'm going to get the debt- I should try to go to a school that will give me a little more leverage in finding a strong job (Illinois?).

Well, it seems that both of you need to sit down and see where you would like to live. This is not a decision that should be decided after you're "stuck" at a law school. It seems that you are REALLY against living in Florida, and I hope you've told your husband how strongly you feel. How strongly does he feel about NOT living in FL? At the same time, it doesn't appear that you've applied to GA or NC schools? If so, why not? That makes me think that you're not as against living in FL as it seems at first glance, but I'm just a person on the internet trying to decipher your statements!Barbie wrote:

I'm not trying to be antagonistic, so I apologize if I appear to sound like it. I know it's tough, and it's sometimes easier/better for talk it out. I hope you get this resolved for your sake and your husband's.

Oh no, I did. I just don't put things in my TLS profile. I was accepted to GA State but actually would never go there- I hate that place. Got into Wake but don't want to pay sticker in a place like W-S where my husband will never get a job. UNC hasn't and will never respond to my application (lol). UGA ain't about these 163s no-mo. So, here I amGatorStudent wrote:Well, it seems that both of you need to sit down and see where you would like to live. My husband knows I don't WANT to live in Florida, but would definitly rather live in Florida than in the midwest or anywhere up north. I would just prefer somewhere with a little more southern charm and hospitality and better school systems.
My husband is still sending out applications. If somehow, someway he can land a 40k+ job in Gainesville or nearby, I'll be there.. Unfortunately, I don't have long to decide, and I may be double-depositing in the next few days which means I'll probably have to withdraw my UF deposit... (I have to call and ask). And yes, it is very hard and I hate that both of our futures are completely in my hands with... say, 3 ish days to decide

Re: U. of Florida 2010-2011 Applicants!!
You can get up to 20,500 in subsidized and unsubsidized loans, and the rest of the COA can be taken out with Grad Plus loans.PleaseHelpThanks wrote:So 16k is the most we can get to live on? I need at least 20k
Can someone explain how much of each kind of loan we can get? I'm thinking I might need some grad-plus loans, or private, but I don't want to take those out unless I have to.
Also, can we get the money a little early, or is the first day of class when everyone gets it? I mean what do you do if you can't afford to move there without first getting your student loans?
Thanks!
You won't get your disbursement the first day of classes. You'll get it after the drop add period, which is about a week after classes start. This means you need to have some sort of funding to be able to pay for living expenses at least for the first month before the disbursement comes. Not really sure what you're supposed to do while they hold you in limbo, although I know that book costs at least can be deferred until after disbursement. Also, some apartments allow you to wait until you get your disbursement but I think that's an exception and not the norm.

I'm a product of Florida public schools. Granted, my school is in the top 2% nationally, but I still came from a public school. I think that your child's success depends mainly on the parenting and how much effort they are willing to expend in making sure you are learning.

I don't know how they do it, but they came up with some sort of system to "distinguish" the good from the bad. Also, my bad. I just checked the website. They are "Nationally ranked in the top ONE percent of public schools." I think all educational systems suck though. Public schools teach to a test, and private schools can be bribed. Neither gives a true well-rounded education in my mind.

I am public school child as well. Parents were both teachers in Florida public schools as well. My school was not ranked particularly well but I still did well. I agree with you 100%. +1 to all of the above. My parents were both teachers in the Miami-Dade school system (they have since retired), and I attended public schools myself. Nothing about my education was anything other than fantastic, and I was eventually awarded a full scholarship to a very highly-regarded private university. So, yeah, three cheers for FL public schools!
