Houston has weathered the storm somewhat better, but everyone I've spoken with has said they thought this past OCI was the low point and that things were beginning to open up.

Wow Texasforever, I don't know enough to agree with or dispute your post but you just raised my grade related stress from a 7 to an 11. Thanks.
I can't see myself getting anything school related done this week. I've already cleaned my entire place, my car, done laundry, worked out, watched football, but now there's nothing left to do between now and Friday except re-read your dark depressing post, make deals with the big man upstairs, and just hope that Eads doesn't call on me.
So yea, pony up?

Laura Bush spoke in Richmond VA last night and made SMU sound like the greatest school in the continental US. My #'s might be a bit high for SMU but it is definitely a top choice. I like the fact that many SMU JD candidates go into business. As an Econ/Marketing major I find this fact to be pretty appealing.

I believe there were several GWB cabinet members who were SMU law grads.SrLaw wrote:Laura Bush spoke in Richmond VA last night and made SMU sound like the greatest school in the continental US. What was Mrs Bush talking about in Richmond that would cause her to mention SMU? And what did she say that gave you this impression?

Well SMU loves to give $$ to people with high numbers, and $$ is never a bad thing.SrLaw wrote:Laura Bush spoke in Richmond VA last night and made SMU sound like the greatest school in the continental US. Re: SMU 2011
I'm not sure if this is relevant for this thread, but since it's a Texas school and I've been somewhat interested in Texas schools, I just have to ask: Is Texas a good place to practice law? Why is it that just about everyone I come across seems to have aversions to practicing law in Texas or even stories of attorneys who go to practice there and end up regretting it. Maybe it's because I'm from CA.

Re: SMU 2011
Somebody went on a diatribe about this somewhere in this thread but the gist some people just don't like Texas, maybe even a big group of people. And to further that, people in Texas tend to like other people who like Texas. So if you like Texas and want to practice law in Texas for a long time, it's a great place. Conversely if you don't, then it's probably a less than ideal place.lsatextreme wrote:I'm not sure if this is relevant for this thread, but since it's a Texas school and I've been somewhat interested in Texas schools, I just have to ask: Is Texas a good place to practice law? From an outsiders perspective...The tax situation in Texas makes it very business friendly, and makes it a great place to earn money. Your income goes a lot further when the state is taking 10% of your paycheck every week. These things make it seem like it would be a great place to practice law.

+1. I have met many Texans who see Texas as practically another Country.fathergoose wrote:Somebody went on a diatribe about this somewhere in this thread but the gist some people just don't like Texas, maybe even a big group of people. Traditionally, the hotel in Paris that hosts the winner of the Tour de France flies the winners flag for one night. When Lance Armstrong won, they flew the Texas flag, per Lance's request.

+ http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxbud/br ... 012-13.pdf I mentioned this in the UH thread, but basically: although Texas has been hit hard by the recession, it wasn't hit nearly as hard as the rest of the country and is recovering more rapidly.Capitol A wrote:Maybe they end up regretting living in Texas?lsatextreme wrote:I'm not sure if this is relevant for this thread, but since it's a Texas school and I've been somewhat interested in Texas schools, I just have to ask: Is Texas a good place to practice law? Maybe they don't care for our tort reform.

Given that I've already heard back from Baylor and Houston, I'm expecting to hear back from SMU next.

I'm not entirely sure where SMU gets this reputation, other than from it's self-promotion. I think if you look at placement numbers, UH actually sends more graduates into "business" than SMU. I don't know what that means but take it for what you will.SrLaw wrote:Laura Bush spoke in Richmond VA last night and made SMU sound like the greatest school in the continental US. Also texasforever probably has a point but even with the lost class of 2009, 65 graduates (23%) secured jobs with NLJ 250 jobs upon graduation. The lower end of that may not be "big law" by certain standards but at least it's bona fide legal employment.

It may be worse for class of '12, I don't know, but I think generally '09 was the rock bottom. (hopefully I'm not proven wrong).

Anyone else really excited for next week? I'm sincerely hoping that they start releasing some decisions the end of this week, but I don't mind waiting for next week; what's one more week after all of this time? lol

I am soooo excited for next week! An acceptance with $$ at SMU is going to pretty much end my cycle even though I still have 7 pending applications.

Somebody actually mentioned getting a mention of money on the acceptance phone call. I don't know if they actually told an amount or just mentioned that there would be money. I'm hoping for sooner rather than later. With the right amount of cash I could definitely end up in Dallas. I'll definitely be applying for the Sumner's scholarship. Anyone else?thewarflamingo wrote:Last year scholarships came a couple weeks later in February.mcnabb5 wrote:Will they release scholarship $$ next week with acceptances or does that come later?

The January admits received info about their scholarships via mail, and the February admits received info during the phone call letting them know they were admitted.Burgstaller04 wrote:Somebody actually mentioned getting a mention of money on the acceptance phone call.
