I'm so confused as to how the TLS class of 2013 just took a TV show to ridiculously far-fetched new places.

The phrase, outside of its origin, doesn't necessarily have anything to do with television. Jumping the shark is when anything that was once pretty widely hyped officially loses its cool factor.

That may be a cause of jumping the shark, but shouldn't jumping the shark be an action?
