Can you get away with paying the deposit by check, then changing your mind and putting a stop payment on it?

Sounds like an excellent strategy.

I did this once last year. Deposited at a T4 when I realized I wouldn't get in anywhere else. Subsequently realized that was a horrible decision. Called the bank the next day to stop payment on the check, emailed the school to let them know what happened, and no problems ensued.

One of my seat deposit slips say right above the signature part that if you stop payment on the check you will be charged $seat amount + $25 for a canceled check. I suppose they could send that to collections.

Can they go after you if the form has no such language?

As the old saying goes, "Doing the scholarly deed often does not reap the noble benefit."

I would call the school and tell them not to deposit the check, then cancel it. Notify them that you sent it in by mistake and you have no intention of enrolling. They may appreciate that.

It's better than "I sent it but I don't want you to have the money"...

Lol. The thought briefly crossed my mind recently that one could do this. However, I do not recommend stop paying the check as a means to delay your decision. Its gotta happen some time, might as well just make up your mind before the deadline.

A stop payment check is criminally prosecutable, in my county we go after who signs the check. So unless you want the State Attorney's Office calling you about issuing a warrant dont do it

Before service is rendered? What if the check was reported/believed to be lost?

if you put a stop payment on it and the school runs it through the bank, when the legal copy of the check returns stamped stop payment here, atleast in Florida, it is viewed as tendering a Worthless Check which is a misdemeanor or felony based on the amount of the check

Sorry, I am just curious. It's interesting that banks would facilitate you committing a felony.

Typically if your check comes back non-sufficient funds, then the complainant would follow up with a demand letter for payment in full. After 15 days then they would be legall permissible to bring in the check for criminal prosecution. BUT, this all depends on your county/state, where I work the check process is very tricky, there is literally 50 pages of state statutes on checks

Wrong on all accounts...One is legally entitled to stop payment on a check as long as no services have been rendered.

That's if you pay with a check at, say, Wal-Mart and then bounce it. Pretty sure what I'm talking about is different.

This isn't a big deal. Just tell them you don't want to go to school there and then cancel your check. They aren't going to punish you by taking your money.

I just tried this. I called the school to see if they would cancel my deposit but they said they could not because it already went to the cashier's office. Just issued a stop payment so I will let you know how this turns out.

lol...I hope I end up at the same school as this guy.

Maybe they have a board with your application on it saying dont accept checks from this dude....?
