Lol! I got magna cum laude as well, but with a 3.4!! But, that's at Princeton and I think we have the most hardcore grade-deflation. But, hey, guess it all works out in the end.swampthang wrote:What school did you go to where 3.66 is magna cum? Re: Columbia Reserve 2010
Holy cow, we were always told we were deflationary, but maybe our honors were on a different basis? The breakdown for summa/magna/cum was Top 5%/15%/30% which came out to about 3.9/3.8/3.6 my senior year. How did they split it up at Princeton?Chibi_koinu wrote:Lol! At Syracuse, the breakdown was 3.4, 3.6, and 3.8. I think that's pretty normal though?

Re: Columbia Reserve 2010
Hmm, I'm not sure exactly how it worked at Princeton. There was no announcement, or anything in writing, of which GPAs would be sufficient to receive honors. And, honestly, I found out (as I'm assuming many of my other classmates did as well) that I received honors the day before graduation (at my departmental recepetion). I think it's really based on a curve that's individual to each department. I was a psychology major, so I'm imagining my GPA was "high" for my department and thus that got me "high honors," whereas in another department (say maybe English) the grades may have been higher so honors would have been something like a 3.7+GPA, and similar in the oppoiste directon, honors for engineers were probably lower GPAs as well. In retrospect, I think this is a more fair system (at least for my school since grades are sooo deflated it's like a surprise to get two A's in one semester, ugh).

sorry to hear that
I feel like this is the bachelor, and I'm one of three remaining girls, the rest having been picked... and there are only two roses left!

The 3.66 is from BU. Really serious grade deflation, it's ridiculous. Apparently it's because Harvard "gives out A's" and we want to somehow prove a point to our friends across the Charles.swampthang wrote:What school did you go to where 3.66 is magna cum? 3rd reserve in Michigan. 3.5/175.
My letter also said "Class of 2012." I suppose that they are so busy by the time they send out the third round of letters that they don't look too closely for typos...

Have they actually accepted anyone off the reserve list this year? Or is this a never ending game!?

Re: Columbia Reserve 2010
I've actually heard that from my friends who went to BU. Still, that's got to be demoralizing to have your numbers so comparatively low despite the same quality of work.Kiersten1985 wrote:The 3.66 is from BU. Third reserve in Boston dated 7/8. Applied with a 170/3.95 and got a 174 on my June 2010 retake, though I doubt that it'll really help for the waitlists.
