Berkeley Waitlisters

Where are all the Berkeley waitlisters? Anybody know how big it is, or what the chances off of it are?

Here. The email said they usually place about 300 applicants on the waitlist, and we'll find out our quartile on May 1 if we stay on the list. At that point we'll have a better idea of our chances. But in terms of how many folks they take off the waitlist, I think this year may be more unpredictable with a bankrupt CA and the sky-rocketing tuition.

Looking at LSN Boalt waitlists seems to be a bit sparser than some of the others - also, they don't seem to have a priority waitlist/wl distinction.

anyone know in #'s about how many got off the waitlist?

i too think it will be different this year. more applicants, but shitty economy + mad tuition rates. pretty sure i will still take berkeley if they ask and it's not too late though. praying that i'm towards the top of the list!

I think they took something like 12 off the wl last year... here is a quote from Dean Tom:

Waitlist

TLS: What is the size of Boalt’s waitlist?

Dean Tom: “Usually the waitlist is anywhere from 200-300 applicants who are ranked by the admissions committee.”

TLS: Roughly how deep into the waitlist does Boalt go?

Dean Tom: “This year, not very deep. I think the deepest we’ve ever gone was a number of years back, we took about 40 people.”

TLS: Wow, not many.

Dean Tom: “No. This year it was 12. But, it varies from year to year, and this year, because I knew how good the people were on the waiting list, I intentionally admitted fewer people up front, thinking that I could go deeper into the waiting list. But, I wasn’t able to, because the yield rate was very high. A large percentage of accepted applicants decided to attend. ”

TLS: Good for Boalt.

Here I am. Not optimistic if they are letting 12 out of 300 in off the WL. That gives you less chance than an app to Yale.

Edit: Not that this will keep me from hoping and praying all through the summer..

At least it's ranked so we'll know where we stand and whether waiting is worth it.

That's true. But we'll still need to wait till May to hear even that much.

So is it just us then? The waitlist seems a bit sparse. And we're approaching Apri folks! I sent in a LOCI a couple of weeks back. I know the waitlist FAQ said it wouldn't affect my rank but I figured it wouldn't hurt to let Boalt know I'm still interested. Still very much so. Ack! Don't break my heart, Boalt!

Hey did everyone get the "Possible Waitlist Action" email today? Finally!

Edit: Last year, the email went out June 12, 2009. I wonder why Dean Tom sent it out earlier this year.

First time poster weighing in to say I got the possible waitlist action e-mail. Berkeley has been running through my head all week. Can't be a coincidence, can it? Did the e-mail go out to the entire waitlist or only the 1st quartile last year? Do we know if it means anything about the likelihood you'll be taken off if you receive it? Just trying to sort out what this all means.

I wonder how many people they have to accept off the WL to get one to attend though. I assume a lot of people turn it down since they've already made plans, found housing, etc.

Having the same thoughts here, my friend. It doesn't hurt to put a hopeful spin on things. Good luck! The time draws near.

Visited the Admissions Office and the school today. The admissions officer I spoke to was very nice and hospitable. I love the renovations! Love the school! I didn't realize how much I missed Berkeley campus... I'm going to keep hoping and praying here.

Thanks for the good wishes Tangerine! :)

So anyone going to call at the end of business today to find out how deep they'll go into the waitlist?

I'll do it if no one else hasn't. I've been wondering the same thing too.
