Can a school rescind its admit offer before the deadline?

I think most schools have a SIR deadline by April. Can they rescind it? (i.e, filling their class earlier than they had anticipated) I got some good ones, but waiting on some better ones.

I would think not. That would be unfair in the extreme.

Some schools will offer money to students to delay coming for a year.
