Didnt realize places could do this. I assumed all acceptances allow you to stay on another waitlist. What schools do this??

I am already having trouble deciding what to do and this makes me feel i've overlooked something big.

I think its unique to Berkeley, they require no deposit (frankly, I'd much rather put down money and lose it)

I haven't heard of any other school that is so strict, I mean, it's kind of ridiculous... if a school issues a waiting list (like Cal), then they should respect other schools who accept people off their waiting list in the summer

my point is that any dragging past may 1st = de facto waitlist as, in practice, being waitlisted means being made to wait for a decision until after the deposit deadline (may 1st).

How does a WL affect the school's yield? If you're offered a position off the WL, and reject it, does that harm the school? I'm very curious about all this. If last year had ALL waitlists go out by now, I'm thinking maybe they will just keep us held until post-deposit deadline and perhaps have a wave of JR1/JR2s. But I'd imagine it's better to WL people as a test of their interest and to protect yield.

Dunno but anything involving "a wave of JR1/JR2s" sounds like something I'd be interested in.

Anytime a school accepts someone, regardless of whether in the regular pool or off the w/l, this affects their yield numbers. Among other reasons, this is why schools are so focused on accepting someone off the waitlist that they are almost certain will accept the offer of admission

Me, too  I just can't see why we would not be WLed yet unless there's a method to the madness. To simply keep people hanging for a while only to plan to WL them the whole time makes no sense... to me at least

Ahh ok. At any rate, I've heard of the school giving people a heads up though, as in "hey if we offer you a place, would you accept it?" That's what I had in mind. I assumed that informal "you ARE coming right?" helps the WL be safer for their yield.

My GPA is JUST a hair below a 3.9 - so if you're exactly at 3.9 you have me beat. :D

ya, I mean, I never had a JR1, so I didn't think I was going to be outright admitted, but I wonder how common it is to be WL without a JR1, who knows

hope you remaining guys the best!

... and if not, I'll see you on the Waitlist Harvard 2010 thread!

Id be happy about it, they only seem to be sending out WL and Rejections at this point. I still havent had a JR1, so a WL is about the best I can hope for right now.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
