Held By Harvard Club - 2010

Post by Core » Wed Jan 13, 2010 1:59 pm

Of course, I am the one creating this thread. As with the JR1 but no JR2 thread, commiserate, discuss, predict, gossip.
I was held via e-mail today. I submitted 10/17, under review since 10/23, and had a JR1 just before Thanksgiving. This is a bad sign, but this may be related to my <25% LSAT + URM status (URMs with lower-than-median numbers usually have slow cycles, I'm told. Stats and dates on LSN.)

I'm also a URM and expecting a long, slow death at HLS. Thought I'd join the fun.

What does the email say? I'm actually hoping to be held

EDIT: has anyone heard of late-in-coming JR1s right now? Or maybe they're doing those a lot later, only to the folks who are currently being held?

How many months will this take... :(

Held today. I'm disappointed, but at least it's better than a rejection or WL. Are you guys sending in LOCIs?

It feels good to finally have a place to call home. Held like two weeks ago. But my LSAT is pretty low for H and I never got a JR1, so I am also in that "ecstatic I didn't just get straight rejected" group

Do we send extra recommendations through LSDAS still? Or just straight to the admissions office?

Harvard wrote: The Admissions Committee has reviewed your application and has decided to hold it for further review. Although we regret the immediate uncertainty this entails, the purpose of holding applications is to ensure that each application receives thorough and fair consideration. Once a larger portion of the applicant pool has been reviewed, the Committee will be able to provide you with a decision to admit, deny, or wait-list your application.

These decisions may be made at any time between now and late spring. Unfortunately, it is not possible to predict the next decision on your application or the timing of that decision. If you are facing a deadline with another school, you may want to inform us, but we still may not be able to provide you with definitive information.

A hold decision provides you with the opportunity to update and supplement your file. For example, if you have received additional grades since submitting your transcripts to LSDAS, please send these new grades to LSDAS. Additional letters of recommendation are also welcome. If you have a special interest in attending Harvard, please feel free to tell us about that as well. Any new information that you feel might be helpful is appropriate. All correspondence to our office should include your LSDAS registration number and be signed by you.

We will be unable to confirm with you over the phone if we have received any of the above information. If you would like to confirm receipt, please include a self-addressed stamped postcard with any correspondence and we will mail it back to you.

We will make final decisions as soon as possible. However, if you do not hear from us again before mid-April, you may want to reserve a place at another law school while awaiting Harvard's final decision. Thank you for your patience and your interest. We will contact you as soon as the next decision on your application has been made.
Lovin' the last paragraph... no guarantee of a decision by mid-April :(

Also held. No JR1. Can't decide whether that is good or not.

I wonder what the chances are of getting in once you have been held. I'm guessing we've been held because we're not super awesome auto-admit candidates, but we're also too good to throw away just yet. That has to make up a good portion of the people who end up getting in, right? I mean, some people have to have median/below median numbers.

Speaking of numbers, what kind of numbers is the "held" club working with? I'm 4.0/173 (168).

I haven't been held (or anything from H), but based on the Additional Info section of several LSN accounts from the past few years, you could hear much earlier than that. Some people who were held got a call 2 weeks later with good news.

So let's say our fall grades lower our GPA, but not by too much. Is this bad? Or good, since it's an indication that you haven't slacked off completely.

I think that (almost) any updates you can send to them are worth sending. Putting in the time to retrieve another transcript, construct a LOCI, ask for another LOR, etc. shows your interest in the school -- that's what they are really looking for.

I have stats on the really low side (potentially below 25% for LSAT and on the lower end for GPA, though I don't know off the top of my head what the 25-median-75s are), so I'm surprised I didn't get outright rejected. Never got a JR1 though, so doubt I'm going to get a call anytime soon

How many of you guys got JR1s?

edit: non-URM

169 here.
not sure if that counts as mid-160s, but according to the 170 wall that lots of schools have (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, UVA), it's pretty much the same.
