Anyone know anything about this? I'm anxious to hear back from them; they're really high on my list.
The Email I got said that they hoped to have all EA applicants notified by the end of January. According to LSN, decisions were starting to come out by now last year.

Did your U of A status checker ever say complete? Mine has been stuck on Application received since the beginning of December.
It has been at "Application Complete" since December 9th. Maybe try giving them a call? They were really helpful. I didn't even ask if mine was under review, I only asked them to check my application, and the woman told me the adcomm had it right then and would have a decision by Wednesday.

I've been at "app complete" at U of A since 11/13! Maybe that means I'll hear something soon...hmmm.... were you EA?

ETA: maybe we should start a U of A thread too...

No, I did RD. Maybe that is the difference.[/quote]

I'm RD as well, so maybe that's it.

Nope, RD. Hoping to hear from both schools soon, I really would like to stay in AZ.

Hi All:

I am a 1L at ASU. I was accepted at both UA and ASU last year in January (I wanted to be in AZ so they were my top choices). I applied EA to ASU and early to UA (both in mid-September). I know I got the acceptance to ASU before January 15th, and I think my acceptance to UA by the end of January (but the office at UA was backed up last year because of the dean leaving and thus having to redo the materials). Let me know if you have any questions about ASU or UA (but I will be more helpful regarding ASU!). Good luck!

I just emailed the Director of Admissions (I met her at my school's Law Day) and this is what she said regarding when we might hear back from them:

"To answer your questions, EA applicants will be hearing from us in the next couple of weeks. We will definitely have something to you by the end of January. Decisions from us are usually conveyed by mail or phone calls."

Good luck to everyone!

Hi! thanks for stopping by. Do you mind if I ask a few questions?

1. What caused you to choose ASU over UofA?
2. How is the ASU placement outside of Arizona - do they reach well into Southern CA?
3. How are student fairing with the current turn in the economy? Is the state of Arizona fairing well enough that students have summer gigs?

1. ASU v. UA
This is a contested topic on this board and in general. I will first say that I am originally from Phoenix but did not attend either school for undergrad so I am not biased against either school. Additionally, I believe that after dealing with residency issues, I feel that ASU is more flexible if you want to become a resident or have any residency issues. I was a resident at ASU and not UA (however, I had already made my decision). I really liked both schools when I toured (I had been accepted to 5-6 other schools and ASU and UA were my favorite). However, I prefer Phoenix to Tucson. I would have been fine living in Tucson for three years but would have moved back to Phoenix after school. I didn't want to have to relocate for breaks and worry about lost networking opportunities. Also, ASU is the only established law school in Phoenix; it is very rare to have only one law school in a large city. I have friends at UA, and they like it so I really don't think you could go wrong. I think both schools are very comparable to one another. UA has the higher rank, but ASU has the location. Also, ASU admissions numbers are now almost identical to UA; there are some very intelligent people at ASU. My advice is to visit both schools/cities and attend whichever one is the better fit. From talking to people, ASU and UA place about the same. In Phoenix, there could be a slight alumni bias for one school vs. the other, but neither school seems to be superior.

2. ASU in Southern Cal.
ASU will obviously place better in AZ than CA. I would imagine that you would have a shot in Southern California (especially if you have some connections in the area you want to practice). However, your best shot might be to work in Arizona for a couple of years and then try to move after you have a strong work background. I would not attend either AZ school if you would not be comfortable living in Arizona afterward (in case you couldn't land work in Southern California). I did tour with a UA student from my same undergrad in Los Angeles who had landed a great job in L.A. In short, I think CA would be possible, but I would not depend on it. The beauty of the AZ schools is that there are really only the two. In Los Angeles, you have at least half a dozen schools competing for jobs.

3. Arizona Schools in Summer
This is a tricky question. Big law in Arizona is suffering (like it is everywhere) and is not doing much recruiting. However, there are small and medium sized firms that are thriving. The backup for ASU students is the externship program (although you have to pay tuition). I have heard that UA might not make you pay for credits and will let you do the program on a volunteer bases. Many of the 2Ls are still trying to line up something for summer. However, there is still spring OCI. I luckily have something lined up at a smaller firm for summer. From what I can gather, as opposed to grades dictating summer placement, networking is becoming more important. Luckily, ASU is well respected in the Phoenix legal community so the school has a shadow program for the lLs and is encouraging us to meet as many people as possible. Hopefully, I can answer this better in a month or two.

Hopefully this helps. Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

I responded to the previous poster. However, I will add that I struggled greatly with this decision. In the end, for me, I did not find the difference in ranking to trump the location of ASU (being in Phoenix). In Phoenix, I do not think the legal community in general favors either school. I really think it comes down to where you are comfortable. Some people love Tucson and some people love Phoenix. I have friends at UA that are happy. However, as soon as the semester ended they drove to Phoenix for the entire break; I enjoyed being able to stay put. The re-modeled law school at UA is beautiful, but the law library and the location of the law school at the ASU campus in my opinion are nicer. I honestly don't think you can go wrong. From what I have seen the student bodies both seem intelligent and similar to one another.

In your experience, how generous (or not) were both schools with financial aid?

Thanks for answering questions for us!

Requested a fee waiver from ASU in October and was told to apply and then mail in the form. After waiting like two months I e-mailed to ask if the waiver had been approved and they said it was being considered. Heard nothing since. Ive had admission decisions made faster at other schools than ASU is taking on deciding a fee waiver. -1 For their admissions dept.

From the people I know at both schools, they were both pretty generous with financial aid/schcolarship. Some got money from UA and not ASU and some found ASU more generous. The initial dollar amounts they offer might not seem as much as private universities (like USD or Pepperdine) but when you look at the fact that you are/might gain residency, even-out-of-state tuition is cheaper than a private university, and that the cost of living is MUCH cheaper (I lived in L.A. for three yeas...cost of living is about half), the money is good. Also, both admission offices are willing to try and work with you. Both schools also seem eager to try and pull you away from the other! I would say UA was initially a bit easier to work with, but ASU made the better recruiting effort. At UA, I spoke with and toured with the dean of admissions (who is very nice). At ASU, I was called by the dean, the dean of admission, an judge who is an alum, and a current student. Basically, both schools did their best to be friendly and accessible.

The admissions office takes awhile. I think this is mostly because they don't start making decisions until January. I would call with any questions. They are usually very friendly when you call, and you might get your answer right away.

FWIW, my mom is the office admin for one of the biglaw's Phoenix office and she basically said that they would look at ASU or U of A the same because one isn't leagues 'better' than the other in a definitive way. Also, they tend to view ppl from AZ schools more favorably than even T14 grads to a degree because there is a better chance that an associate will stay in AZ if they went to school there as well. I had a good friend from UG who went to Columbia law and they ended up not even looking at him, but looked at someone who wasn't even on law review at ASU. He ended up getting one of the few coveted offers from DOJ, very bright kid, but Columbia law didn't mean much to them out in the Valley. However, you still have to be excellent at either school to get recruited by the big firms....but the cost of living is so low, salaries are comparatively high, and the weather is unbelievable.

Still nothing on LSN about anyone hearing anything :( As someone who didn't apply early action, this makes me fear I will be waiting a very very long time to hear any response.
