Hey guys, going off topic here (in true TLS study group fashion), is anyone familiar with the ED process? I'm gonna apply to UVA and NU, they're my super reach schools and I won't get in, but I was thinking of applying ED to one or the other or both. I know NU's ED is pretty restrictive and I'd just be bumped to regular decision if I didn't get turned down outright, but with that being said, would it be smarter to apply UVA ED and then if that didn't work out shoot one to NU? I'd like to get any sort of bump I could at these schools in case one of them is feeling risky enough to take me.

Edit: used "super" twice in back to back sentences, had to take one out.

1. Are you a splitter? (I am so I only really know the logic for splitters not for regular folks)
2. How debt-averse are you?

Edit: I believe you cannot have applied ED anywhere else if you apply ED NU

I'm super splitter, and I'm not too debt-averse, I'd be willing to take on a decent amount of debt for the outcome at those schools. I'm wondering if NU moves you to RD, does that make you eligible to ED elsewhere? I'd imagine it does.

Okay cool, I am also an extreme splitter and only moderately debt-averse. The top end of my schools list is also UVA/NU but I've got Mich on there for some reason too.

Do you have a strong preference between UVA and NU? If not I'd start with NU and hope they reply quickly, then if its bad news shoot one to UVA. I do believe I've seen some folks get straight up dinged over on LSN from applying ED @ NU though, so it's not like the WUSTL ED where they either take you or roll you over, one of the two. And yeah my understanding is that if NU dings you/rolls you over you're free to ED somewhere else.

GULC also has a pretty fast ED process.

Edit: This is six years old, so don't pay too much attention to the numbers but the ED strategy mostly holds I believe: viewtopic.php?t=162680

That's if you're willing to pay near-sticker to get a T14 degree tho

If I somehow got a 174ish, would it be worth trying ED at Northwestern? 3.45 GPA, PI basically my only interest (and they don't seem to place very well in that).

So, you'd have to do some digging on LSN but my initial inclination is yes, because you'd be unlikely to get straight-up dinged with those stats. Are you K-JD though? I assume you know this but WE is critical to NU

Yeah, my WE/softs are generally absolute shit, should probably have mentioned that.

At 171/3.45 I'm already more likely than not to get in on MyLSN but without enough money to justify it over Vandy or WUSTL.

Awesome, thanks! I don't really have a strong preference, I'm from Virginia and I know UVA is an amazing school, but at the same time getting out of Va is appealing and I like Chicago and what I've seen from NU. I fully expect to get dinged from both anyway, but I'd like to maximize my chances of getting a lucky break haha.

I'd look for sub-3.5 GPAs on LSN that applied ED to NU and see how that worked out for them. Especially after the retake there's a solid chance that could be worth your time, given the guaranteed $50k if you get in to NU via ED.

As for me, with my atrocious sub-3 GPA and WUSTL having a 25th percentile GPA of 3.15 I plan to apply there ED with my 168 since they don't ding anyone off of ED and if I get rolled over to RD I can probably get a scholly if I crack 170 in September. I also only want PI so a T20 with a good LRAP/minimal debt is my ideal outcome. And I really like the looks of WUSTL's admin law DC externship program. Edit: And WUSTL guarantees full tuition if they let you in ED.

I'd go ED at NU then! You never know. See what I said above about WUSTL though.

Yeah, that's a good plan I think. I think I'll get close to a full ride to WUSTL with or without ED judging from MyLSN so I probably won't do it, but that's my most likely school to actually attend also.

Yeah that seems right to me. Did you get the WUSTL interview invite email last week?

I did. Did you respond to it? I'm still not sure if I should or should just wait and apply once the cycle actually starts.

I think it's actually good that you need help in a different area! Especially if we end up doing small groups or pairs, you can help people in the sections you are best at and others can help you in Logic Games!

Thanks, I'd like to know what that is all about. Kinda weird seeing their email among all the TTTTs.

Yes please do! Very curious whether this is purely informational or them trying to get ahead of the game in terms of protecting dat LSAT median

I'm imagining it's mostly them trying to get high scorers to commit to applying to wustl. I can't see it being too personal or anything especially since it's still July.

For those who are also running out of recent PTs, how do you go about this issue? I kinda wanna set the time limit to 32 minutes instead of 35. And how the f do you find the motivation to study all over again?

Working on "identifying the flaw" by reading comments on Facebook videos... that counts as studying, right?

Just did the game that I missed 3 questions on in June. Got them all right with no difficulty.

The potential 174 stares at me, gloating, mocking me.

Here's some real-world knowledge that you don't necessarily need to know to understand the flaw. (Gross generalizations incoming) The elderly tend to vote at the highest frequency. It's not because their generation has always been civically active, more so that the older you get the more you tend to vote. Younger folks (18-30, let's say) are not as civically active - generally they have less time/motivation to vote when compared to the elderly. Here's a brief article on the subject. In a nutshell, a particular individual is less likely to vote at the age of 25 than they are at 65.

Understanding that, the argument presents that (again, generalizing) because people at 65 vote more than people at 25, that must mean that people at 25 today are more disconnected with the political system than in the past. But you are comparing people at 65 today to people at 25 today and making a comment about change over generations. That's just not right (especially if you knew that at 25 you are less likely to vote than you would be at 65). If they were comparing Baby Boomer's voting rate at 25 to Millennials rate at 25, that would be a more apples to apples comparison.

There are other flaws with that argument, but above is what the answer choice is getting at.

Hmm! This point in particular helped explain the flaw. Thanks for the explanation. Still kind of a weird question that I probably would have got wrong anyway. The phrasing of "earlier in a generation vs later in a generation" in the answer choice threw me off big time.
