(STEM = huge classes here so it's really difficult to get to know profs. And the labs are basically all taught by grad students.)

that was a huge selling point for me. I was basically between two schools, one where the faculty:student ratio was almost 10, and the other was over 20. I chose the "newer" program, but in the last few years it's gained a lot of traction in my region.

I did have SOME grad students who instructed the lower level labs, but the main professors were always super available and helpful.

I'm pretty lucky because I have more professors to choose from per class than is available at most other schools, so I'm rarely forced to take classes with profs with bad reputations.

Yeah, got a B and an A in the two years that I took his courses nevertheless but basically didn't go to any lectures  He didn't seem to mind cos his average attendance rate was something like 30%

I kinda picked him because he's a really nice guy and he's one of the few people in our department who responds to emails quickly.

He didn't say it but I think he knew exactly who I was and was just being nice and not mentioning it.
I think as long as you have one academic LOR that's very personal (like with your project supervisor or tutor or something) then that's good, you don't really need two LoRs both from people who knew you well, though it obviously is a plus

That makes sense, and is good to hear. It's hard to get two glowing, personal LoRs from classroom profs.

I hate that in order to get LoRs like that, you basically have to gun and have no shame. Becoming one of those students I've always rolled my eyes at is going to suck.

Fucking exactly...
Easier if you can couple with class with in-class participation marks imo.

Yeah, although the problem with those classes is usually the participation is in the form of discussion groups which are run by TAs. I think your best bet is a prof who you took a small upper-level class with. I took all of my intro level political science classes with profs I knew taught 4th year classes I'd want to take. I'm hoping that'll work in my favour.

Take an upper-level class that most students avoid because it is perceived as work but you find interesting IMO. That's what I did, and it's one of the professors I got to know the best. It was a 6000 level class in operations consulting (basically, using Excel to model operations - i.e. build a Benihana's in Excel or develop a rule to assign guests to hotel rooms to best match preferences) and few people took it because it sounded hard / like a lot of work.

I also contributed a good amount during class, because most people didn't want to speak. Basically, the professor defaulted to just call on me after no one spoke for three minutes even though I stopped raising my hand after awhile.

I had no clue people clerked so long after they graduated -- http://abovethelaw.com/2017/04/supreme- ... hs-clerks/

This is a very good idea. To be honest, I think once you get to upper-level courses, you'll always do better in a "harder" class that you are genuinely interested in, than in an "easier" class that puts you to sleep.

Also, man am I loving these employment stats from UVA and Duke. Makes me think I'll be able to escape the cold without selling my kidney for Berk/Stanny.

Wonder if the post in the 2016 employment thread on Chi's numbers is correct. If H and Chi are both at 19% fed clerks then shiiiiieeeeet.

Wasn't duke at like 15%? business is apparently booming right now. Which means that when I graduate law school I'll be just in time for the bubble to burst

On your LOR concerns, you're in neuro at Berk so a small class size lab should be available like it was for me at Berk right?

BTW, UChicago is amazing and when a few of you manage Rubies it's a no brainer. I might commit there in a few weeks which would be a complete change of course for me all within a month. I am seriously pissed that I like it as much as I do. The preftige is outa this world in a "I can just feel it in my bones as soon as I step on campus" kind of way.

Yeah, Duke's is ... holy fuck. Really great to see these numbers.

Yes there are small labs here at UC Berkeley in Berkeley, California but taught by grad students and barely any neuro ones. A few small seminars though.

Sounds like you can't go wrong either way.

Yeah I srsly don't get posts that are like "I have a Ruby at Chi but I kinda like H better so much preftige and such wow employment barrack obama, but would have to 100% debt-finance, I dunno what to do. :( "
