what is t16
more people than not don't get big law at GULC/Texas/Vandy and only around half get it at a lot of t14s. its not a guarantee

do these stats include people who don't even attempt to go for biglaw right after school at all?

yeah but the only schools we can reasonably assume people not going to big law are actually self selecting out are Yale, Stanford, Harvard, Chicago, and NYU

what makes you think those are the only schools where people self select out of biglaw?

They could i have been told but NYU give almost nothing for merit scholarship so typically the people who choose it over other schools are already set their mindon big law or kids who didnt get the clerkship.

After calculating how much I could realistically save over the next 3 years, however, I realized it made far more sense for me to apply to GULC part time since I will be stationed in D.C. for the next 3-5 years (if I decide to extend). That way my cost of living is at least covered and I can realistically afford $13,000 out of pocket tuition my first year and $20,000 after that.

Im in the same boat. Im looking at GULC and GW. It is a lot easier (in the financial sense) because I make 60k a year and dont have to worry about anything other than tuition. With the GI bill and the money that these schools give out, it isnt unimagineable that you could get out of there with no debt. The only issue that I see with this is if you get orders during your first couple of years. The AF only lets you defer assignement for 12 months. I don't have retainability to go overseas (the only other possible assignment for me) so all I have to worry about is getting orders, declining them, and then getting shown the door at the end of my enlistment (hopefully not, cuz I wanna go JAG). Not sure what your situation is like but just make sure that you don't have the potential to get orders. Once that money is spent you are never getting it back.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to use the GI Bill. I went to the Air Force Academy for my undergrad and service Academy graduates are not eligible for 100% the GI bill until 8 years on active duty. Don't even get 60% until 6 years. Which I can't complain about because I got a $450,000 undergraduate education for free. Luckily, I have already spoken to my career managers down at AFPC and they said if I start my JD part time, they will make sure I can finish it. Also, I still have at least two years at my base, and I could turn down any orders after that since my remaining commitment would be less than a year at that point. I work as a contracting officer, so it would not be hard to get stationed at another base in the DC area or one of the many acquisition programs, like the joint strike fighter, we have here either. I am not sure what career field you are in, but have you looked into FLEP? That was what I was attempting to do before contracting told me they would not release me to go to law school full time (only 58% manned for officers in this AFSC.) I can wait until I am down to only one year remaining on my commitment and then probably get released for FLEP, but that would be the only shot I have at getting picked up for it. I don't want to put it off for 3 years and wait that long since I am still in the school mode.

It would suck going to work from 0730 to 1630 every day and then class from 1745-2045 and studying late into the night. However, I honestly don't think it could be that much worse than USAFA was. Waking up at 0500 for wrestling practice, class from 0730-1500, wrestling practice again from 1545-1830, and then studying and homework until lights out at 2300. Not to mention the other military commitments and training. Put up with 4 years of hell, so figured why not jump in and do it again. Plus my squadron commander knows my plan and is very supportive of me pursuing it.

NYU has one of the best reputations for public interest stuff

ETA: they are pretty stingy with scholarships you're right, but I don't think you're right about everyone going in not wanting a clerkship

i never said didn't want their's a small percentage compared to other T6. But it's self selection though because they inherently give less so you get the kids who could go to UVA cheaper but choose NYU sticker bc of location and big law chances, and alumni relations....

i consider texas and ucla t16 not bc of the money but more the stability in getting big law. i used t16 in the context of seamus saying you need to be top percentage to get big law, and i said you do not if you are going to these 16 law schools because consistently around 35 percent get big law...
