Because for the first time you actually have the choice to do it.

Law School is my avenue of social mobility. And NYC is at very top.

Gotta get a Prius. I spend less than $1k a year on gas and drive ~16k miles a year. Is $2k a month for a decent 2 bedroom in Manhattan?

Not decent as in "decent," but decent as in decent.

it's ultimately up to you, but as you've seen multiple people in this thread say, there are no opportunities that come with a law degree that don't involve practicing law. No one wants a [insert literally any other job] who overvalues himself because he spent an exorbitant amount of money on a degree irrelevant to the job at hand

But as long as you get a firm job the student loans will take care of everything until your firm is taking care of you.

Technically every apartment that's not a studio apartment can be a two bedroom.

decent as in you will likely have a 40+ minute commute to work and won't be in the best neighborhood. currently in 3 bedroom for mid-2k that fits that description (although I personally love the neighborhood)

I was going to wait until my Air Force commitment was up before applying to law school because I really wanted to go to NYU or Columbia (probably can't get in with my GPA though.) After calculating how much I could realistically save over the next 3 years, however, I realized it made far more sense for me to apply to GULC part time since I will be stationed in D.C. for the next 3-5 years (if I decide to extend). That way my cost of living is at least covered and I can realistically afford $13,000 out of pocket tuition my first year and $20,000 after that.

Don't know in general but last time I traveled to Wall Street for business I was paying 10+ on average.

A tall blue moon was ~10. Johnny walker black was ~18, glennfiddich ~18. Whiskey & coke was 12 for well.

Not sure how representative this is to rest of NY though.

even if you get it for half that price, or a fourth, or free, how can you justify three years of not working - but still paying for food and rent and happy hour - at probably the most critical time in your life just because you want to be able to say you went to law school (let's face it - that's what this boils down to)?

pretty easily really. plus, fyi, since you are figuring my expenses, i have a 2 year old.

"dad play with me"
"no i'm studying"
"why"
"because this is fun"

this is absurd dude, I really don't understand it. To make such a time-consuming and costly decisions just for shits and giggles - especially when you have a dependent - is seriously unfathomable to me. Law school is already a strain on peoples' relationships when they actually want to use their degrees, but to go for it on a lark? Just... why??

I am married with two kids and plan on attending law school in 2016. I have a good amount of savings and 100% scholarship (GI Bill); however, after reading this post I am deeply concerned about my future. Will my marriage / family make it through three rigorous years of law school Whacka? I request your insight and guidance immediately so I can plan accordingly.

Respectfully,

Me
