The bible tells us "ask and you shall receive", I'm guessing she's banking on that biblical principle.jumbo2016 wrote:Who knew it was this easy? Seems like I'm one of the few who didn't major in political science or something similar. Interesting

Pretty sure I'm on "email watch" and I'm going to forward my email to my girlfriend so that she can be disappointed in me and tell me whether or not I should be upset...She's really good at making me feel bad about myself. Why not let her have this one too?

Well, according to Cambridge's website, the last time the test was administered on June 8th, scores came out on Thursday, June 25th. So I am going to be on watch tomorrow, no matter how unlikely it is that scores will come.Riversend wrote:Starting Friday I'm officially on 'watch mode'. The official release date was not as late as it is this year though.Applesauce11 wrote:Well, according to Cambridge's website, the last time the test was administered on June 8th, scores came out on Thursday, June 25th. I have a low GPA and I'm feeling a little reassured checking my school's law school report. Average GPA for students admitted to the top schools is below median for all of them so far.

My school publishes average student info applied, admitted, matriculated to each law school on their pre-law page. It's not that much lower at all but averages are definitely closer to 3.5-3.6 than they are to 3.8-3.9 which is a little calming.Dstunna wrote:Where did you garner this information?jumbo2016 wrote:I have a low GPA and I'm feeling a little reassured checking my school's law school report. I'm also thinking of doing the same thing. I'm going to have someone open the email and go by gradation. 164 and above is "decent," 166 is "good," 168 is "great," and 170 and above is excellent. I'm going to have them go sequentially until I get to my score. I just can't handle it!Whnlifegvsulmns wrote:Pretty sure I'm on "email watch" and I'm going to forward my email to my girlfriend so that she can be disappointed in me and tell me whether or not I should be upset...She's really good at making me feel bad about myself. "You can approximate the integral under the curve and you don't need a function. You can use basic algebraic methods such as the midpoint rule or the trapezoid rule."JackelJ wrote:So uh you guys should both probably go back to Calc 1 before you start talking about integrals. You can approximate the integral under the curve and you don't need a function. You can use basic algebraic methods such as the midpoint rule or the trapezoid rule. Because I was curious and didn't want there to be any misconceptions about applying calculus or anyone's chances of salary, I went ahead and approximated the integral under the curve of the NALP graph. I used the trapezoid rule and excel. I estimated the values at each salary and I might be off. However, the NALP webpage where the graph is states: "The right-hand peak shows that salaries of $160,000 accounted for about 17% of reported salaries." So my estimates below are pretty good IMO as I am only off by 1.3 at that end. But, I still may have made a mistake somewhere or typed an equation incorrectly. NALP data I used: http://www.nalp.org/class_of_2013_bimodal_salary_curveryangreenspan wrote:First off, you take integrals of functions, not of graphs. Second, there are a bunch of discrete functions between 60 and 160k, none of which we know. Third, even if we were to add up the integrals of all those functions, it would just give us a number. That number's meaningless unless we know the summation of all the integrals of all the functions in the graph.yellowyak46 wrote:Well if we were to take the integral of the graph between 60 and 160k, it looks like about 30% of the salaries reported are in that range. Glad to know that you have it all figured out, though.
You meant to suggest that we eyeball the area under the graph between 60 and 160k. And then compare it to the total area under the entire graph. Glad to know you're so much better at calculus than other people, though.
My Results:
$10,000-80,000 is about a 64.8% chance
$85,000-155,000 is about a 16.9% chance
$160,000 and above is about a 18.3 % chance
Keep in mind that it was reported only 57% of all 2013 law grads had full time jobs that required job passage. Source: http://www.americanbar.org/news/abanews ... ocia4.html
So the actual probabilities will be much lower when you take all 2013 law graduates into account.
That’s my point. It's why I told the guy, "You meant to suggest that we eyeball the area under the graph between 60 and 160k. And then compare it to the total area under the entire graph."
My beef isn't with the dude’s conclusion (in fact I agree with it), but with the fact that he mentioned “taking the integral of the graph” to make his argument seem more intellectual than it is. You’re not taking the integral of the graph, you’re approximating the area underneath the graph. You don't have any function with which to take integrals.

Pretty sure I'll just get "oh. What score did you want?...you sure?...uh huh...I see...Well...come here baby let me give you a hug" (which usually means I'm effed score-wise).Oskosh wrote:I'm also thinking of doing the same thing.
