Hey mornincounselor -

First, you should know that this is the second of a two-question stim (ahh, the olden days...). That's part of what's driving the oddness. The first question of the pair actually IS an Identify the Disagreement question.

This question stem is basically asking "which of the following would be in conflict with the socialist's statements". You don't actually have to add the answer in to what the conservative already said - you can ignore the conservative's original statement entirely here (again, that's the weirdness of the two-question stim). That's why this is in the MSS packet - it's essentially a "most likely FALSE" question.

Cover up the conservative's speech, and just focus on finding an answer that most directly contradicts the socialist - give this a shot before reading the rest of my post.

The socialist says that historical analysis is important because we need that analysis to understand, and we need to understand in order to transform society.

(E) is saying that history is accidental, and it's impossible to actually make grand changes in social conditions (transform society). In other words, historical analysis is pointless for attempting to transform society.

Direct conflict!
