GRRR... How do I improve RC???

Postby CPAlawHopefu » Tue Apr 28, 2015 3:42 am

June taker here.

Currently averaging -1/2 on LG and -3/4 on LR. I think I can eventually bring down the LR to -2/3 range with enough drilling.

But it's the RC that totally kills the score, I average -8/9 on the section, and it's been like this for nearly a month now, and for the love of God I'm just lost on how to improve this section. If only I could somehow learn to bring this section down to -3/4 range I MIGHT have a shot at scoring 170 but with my current range I'm stuck at mid-160's.

6 weeks left, how can i make the best use of my time?

I found my RC score was pretty rough until I really focused on slowing down while reading and not wasting time on questions. I think for most people who are scoring badly, they don't spend enough time in the passage and want to rush to the questions, which themselves become a time suck because you have to double back. If you give the passage the time it deserves you should spend very little time on each questions (particularly since in RC, the vast majority of Qs are easy and they'll just throw in a couple that require you to really think hard).

Of course I'm not sure what your specific issue is, but the above was definitely what helped me.

i take the passage slowly, underline, take notes, and make sure i know exactly what each sentence is saying and what it means in relation to the passage as whole. i underline and take notes to in order to stay mentally engaged in the passage. then the questions move very quickly. i think the challenge of RC is absorbing the passage which means staying mentally engaged and interested in it.

i try to make each passage a task of dissecting its purpose and support, just like a LR question. treating the passage like a task instead of just a spew of words to be internalized keeps me engaged and interested in what each sentence means for the rest of the passage which allows me to absorb the info. i finish the section with about 1-2 mins left typically, but rarely feel pressed for time.

i think if you are approaching a passage saying "next passage. memorize: GO" you should trying taking marking the passage somehow. i think at least in drilling and blind review it is helpful because you begin being able to use this approach at least mentally if you do not have time to use it during real PTs.

if you are having trouble with the questions themselves, by that i mean not really understanding the task of each question and why one answer is definitely right and one is definitely wrong, then you need to spend time studying the purpose of each question. all the knowledge of the passage won't help you if you can't select the right answers when it is right in front of you.

Really depends on what issues you are facing. Are you able to finish all the passages/questions comfortably within the time limits and are just getting the answers wrong, or are you getting questions wrong because you are crunched for time?

can you elaborate how much time you take to read the passage and how much on questions, how was your rc score before and final, and any specific thing you did as you slowed down your reading.
