I'm trying to negotiate $$$ from some schools that I CLEARLY don't want to attend. I'm just trying to get more out of them to use it against my top choices. Could I sorta give them a polite ultimatum?

Say something like "I really like your school for X and Y reasons. However, I was wondering if you could make it a bit more reasonable, because in the current state I cannot attend."

Then if they say "We don't negotiate"

Basically say "I'm sorry then, but I have to withdraw my application. Thanks for everything."

Like, that doesn't come across as rude to me, but I was wondering if, strategically, if that's acceptable.

Caveat that I haven't started negotiating yet, but I've definitely seen people do this successfully in the negotiating scholarships thread. I'll try to find the posts.

ETA: I couldn't find them, but I'm pretty sure it's a credited strategy. Just try emphasizing that you wouldn't withdraw if they were willing to negotiate in the last email.

I realllly want to take a cooking class in the south of France one day. One of my friends did it & said it was the experience of a lifetime.

That would basically be a dream. Let's go :)

Excellent, TLS Foodie Eurotrip, y'all! Who else is in?

Can I get in on this? I speak French and will be y'alls tour guide. Except I don't really want to take a cooking class. So in exchange for the tour guiding can I just eat everything you make? K thanks :)

I think this works in concept, but I would probably rephrase before you send. In particular 'make it a bit more reasonable' reads that the adcom made an unreasonable decision. I'm not sure you meant it that way, though. Perhaps you could say "However, at the current cost, I will be unable to attend. Please let me know if you are able to reconsider my scholarship determination."

My office is one of the few places that didn't close for the day here in Atlanta. 3-6" inches of snow today and tonight, so everything should be closed tomorrow.

That's Georgia for you. It's a mix of not having the proper equipment to deal with any sort of winter weather, lots of hills and twisty roads, the whole city/metro area being poorly planned, Southerners who don't have any idea how to drive in snow, and Northerners who overestimate their ability to drive in snow. This all leads to a mess like what happened last year.

Do you realize that the sun doesn't go down? It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning around, in which case we have two more rotations ... hopefully

Does LSAC release the number of tests taken before or after gray day? I would be interested in seeing if the number went down again

Are we all decided that Friday is the day it's going to go down?

This whole waiting thing is much worse since we've had only 1.5 days of school in the past 12 calendar days due to weather. I'm a high school teacher in the middle of nowhere (just for context: nearest Starbucks is 35 miles away) and so my snow days have been spent agonizing over scores.

I'd follow Shakawkaw's advice and PW but I don't even know the rules to PWing. There are so many unwritten rules here
