You want IP? Do you have engineering background.

Y'all can call me D lol My goal is IP Law or getting involved in foreign policy. Idk if I can study IP and International law in law school or not. That would be amazing since I am interested in both. Background is a BS in Biology with extensive medical background. Several attorneys have told me to go into IP because of my science background and I really like IP, but I don't have an engineering background. Idk if that is a game changer or not. I would prefer to work in northern CA. Unless Yale comes knocking then shit East coast here I come lol I will not hesitate to go to a top 30 school even if I have to cough up the money; however, with these scholarship offers I need to consider every angle I guess.

Career goals?

Either taking the IP route and studying IP law or studying international law to hopefully do something with foreign policy. Its a big predicament for me because i really want to do both.

I know 2 ppl that went to Santa Clara and are now working as patent lawyers in SF. They worked for many years for the tech companies there so they had the connections to make it happen. Idk how other ppl who went to Santa Clara are doing though.

I also know a dude that went to Golden Gate, he's working as a history teacher now b/c he couldn't land a law job.

The attorney that I currently work for went to Golden Gate. He said he's determined to convince me to go there lol

State flagship in a state you want to practice in isn't awful if you have modest goals.
I know Rigo you will probably make fun of me lol but what do you mean by modest goals? and state flagship?
I think he means if you want to practice and live in Wyoming, then going to UW Law isn't a bad option. State flagship = UofM for Michigan, UGA for Georgia, etc.
Why does it matter though? Thanks for the clarification by the way :) So if I want to stay in CA then going to an unranked school in CA isn't a bad option? I don't get why that matters.

Oh god. He must hate you.

lol no I think he just loves Golden Gate. Its weird because Ive always believed that ranking is very important but when I talk to lawyers that have been working, they emphasize getting scholarship and paying for the school more than anything.

The thing about Santa Clara though is that it's outcomes are deceiving. A lot of people go in with a guaranteed job and great connections. Without those, Santa Clara sucks.
That is probably true about a lot of schools that aren't top tier though, unless you got connections off course as you said.

Do you think UC Davis is a good school?

For me personally (and I have modest career goals)....UCD would probably be the cutoff school if I wanted to work in norcal.

Dona- I know a very successful IP lawyer who had a BS in bio so it certainly can be done. IP law is a little different than other fields of law when it comes to finding a job. If you are k-jd than the school ranking matters a lot more. More competitive firms still have lists of law schools that they hire from and they are typically the higher ranked or good regional schools.

If you have 2+ years of technical work experience (I know this is true for engineering I'm not 100% sure about bio) then it can be significantly easier to find a job after graduating law school and school ranking doesn't matter as much. Go anywhere in the top 100 schools and getting a job will be much easier than everyone else you graduate with that doesn't have a technical degree. WE in the field is invaluable for IP work. If you currently work at a tech/science/engineering company and they are willing to pay for law school and move you to the law department after then go to any school that'll give you a JD and enjoy the perks of working in-house

Not sure how relevant this is outside of the 2 large tech/science companies where I have worked, but this is what I was advised of by multiple IP lawyers who worked both in big law, moderate law firms, and in house and I am sorry if it is wrong or not representative. Some of them are also in charge of hiring new lawyers so I don't think it's too outdated.

If by "well" you mean "not doing a single productive thing and instead watching netflix and eating chocolate all day" then life is going great! But I'm getting a handle on my TLS addiction so that's good. Hope life is going well for you too.
