I just look at the ABA reports because I'm super discerning about the types of employment that matter to me.

I'll look at these more tonight.

Would you guys say that the Atlanta legal market is strong? Good? I have significant ties here, and UGA or Emory with $$ seem like good bets for me. Just wondering what you guys' opinions were.

I'm gonna gun places outside of NYC. NYC is solely going to be a backup. I don't want to share an office. F that.

I'm with you on this. This is pretty much why I'm avoiding NYC schools. I don't have enough ties anywhere to get into someplace if I don't go to school there.

+1 the thought of living elsewhere is just weird... not that I wouldn't do it, but idk

I'm gonna gun places outside of NYC. NYC is solely going to be a backup. I don't want to share an office. F that.

I'm with you on this. This is pretty much why I'm avoiding NYC schools. I don't have enough ties anywhere to get into someplace if I don't go to school there.

I mean, my ties are mostly New York now unfortunately so I'm in many ways stuck.
I could probably play up Boston ties because of living in the Berkshires if I were to go to Harvard.
I could gun Los Angeles because of family and childhood ties.

I can just go to a tippy top school, get awesome grades, cross my fingers, and hope for the best. If not, NYC it is and that'll just be the way the cookie crumbles. Most of my friends would do NYC biglaw I presume so I'll probably be more into it then because, ironically, ties.

Well where you go to school seems to be a STRONG tie. So if you get into Harvard, you should be able to have a much easier time in Boston than if you went to Columbia. And if you go to Northwestern you have a good opportunity for Chicago, generally speaking.

I mean, generally. STRONG is a bit too strong though. I know people have a hard time selling Boston and Chicago ties if they're not actually from at least New England or the Midwest, respectively.

Really? That's weird. I know in Seattle local school is super important. I've heard of people who have family here, and went here for high school and college, but have issues breaking in after going to another school.

Dirigo wrote:Seattle isn't special in it's insularity. Obviously a smaller market than Chicago, but ties are super important everywhere but NYC and DC.

It sounds like you're saying that going to a local school doesn't give you as strong a tie as other things though, whereas it seems in Seattle at least those other things take a back seat to the local school.

It could of course be because our local school doesn't give you a lot of places to run to. A T14 is a bit different in that regards.

Either way, I'm pretty much screwed. I'm going to have to network like crazy from day one and play up whatever ties I have. Luckily I have at least a minimum in Chicago and midwest since my wife has family there.

ETA: Of course, that's all part of the fun right?
