Is this forum part of the law school scam?

Post by 09042014 » Mon May 12, 2014 11:01 am

You encourage people to dedicate their lives to a prelaw test. This commits them to a path of ruin for nearly all of them.

The answer to people who got like a 160 on the LSAT isn't retake. It's don't go.

Seriously though, people studying from 150 to 170 is rare, and the rest just commit to a shitty path.

but if you can delay them from applying for at least a year, there's a good chance that they'll come up with something better to do in the mean time and give up on law school

There's a reason I'm going to a state school with no loans

Not if they follow this boards advice to dedicate yourself to LSAT.

Is it that you were good enough to get a good scholarship at that school but not at a better school? Is it that you want to be a dog bite and/or slip-and-fall masterman? The reason here isn't clear.
What?

I'm waiting for the day TLS tells people not to go. It is just a matter of time. Look at the schools that people are still attending at sticker. I'm thinking most of the people on this forum shouldn't go, but that message isn't stated directly yet. 0Ls generally don't want to hear how poor their decisions and choices are, and, the idea that law is a path to a stable, high-paying career is pervasive. There was a thread by a guy who didn't believe that so many people would go to law school knowing they might make $50,000 at best. It is a mystery. Employment transparency has a long way to go.

My favorite part of the lowered applicants/ admissions is when people spin that into a great thing for them because they can get more money or better schools. I feel that is completely missing the point, but not everyone agrees.

Maybe the message will filter out.

"Don't go" is the new "retake"

The progression on TLS is fascinating.

2007: Paying sticker at Hastings is good investment if you want to work in SF.

2014: Don't go to YLS unless school gives you $30k/yr in need-based.

Isn't it the massive debt that he hates, even though he is paying down more per month than anyone could reasonably hope to match? I don't know but maybe it's a combination of everything.

A site like jdunderground the advice across the board is don't go. I told them I was considering T14 with $ vs full ride at a T50 school, and that I was making between $35-40k per year in my prior career. Every single person told me not to go to law school. 2014 will be my highest salary of my life (even though I'm a 2L in school) from the combination of TAing during the year and SAing at a big firm for 12 weeks.

I don't think this site is part of the law school scam at all. If someone retakes and gets 170, then great; even in that situation a lot of their options (like sticker at a T14) will be greeted with "don't go" as advice.

Two important things happened in between:
1. Crash causing legal hiring to change drastically and quickly, including PI jobs.
2. Actual employment data is available. (Remember when no one knew about school funded jobs?)

I wasn't minimizing anything. Those "real world" changes all contribute to the conventional wisdom. And you left out another important change: tuition at Hastings (and at several other schools) more than doubled over the past several years.

I would add #3. TLS posters have seen what the other side of the equation looks like.

People who got what we count as "good outcomes" are coming back in significant numbers to say that the view isn't any better from a V(whatever) firm. It's one thing to take on huge debt and assume you'll have a rough 3-5 years if there is some assurance that once you pay off your debt you have a good shot at a stable and rewarding career. It's an entirely different matter if the goal becomes "get back to zero net worth and then go do something else." Might as well save your youth if that's the case.

I do think the "What are my chances?" forum should be eliminated, because it is not relevant whether someone can get in to a law school, what matters the cost of attending and the job prospects (already covered by "Choosing a Law School").

Also, it's better for people than this:
