Lowest practice test score to 170+

Postby sydney19987 » Tue Sep 17, 2013 9:28 am

I need to hear stories of lowest diagnostic score prepped to 170+.

Has anyone in the 140s made their way to 170+ on the actual exam ?

This question gets asked a lot, but it can be tough to find the answers to it. Here are some:

Sorry, too lazy to put the names in. Those are only from the first page. Try searching "diagnostic" instead of "practice test."

However, I would say that your diagnostic doesn't matter at all unless you can't read. Then it might a little bit.

Large improvement is definitely possible. From a totally non-scientific sampling and data analysis, I'd say 10+ points is the norm at least for a serious study regimen from what I've seen both among people's self-reporting on TLS and from my friend group offline. True heroes can get 15-20. 30+ points is pushing it, assuming your original LSAT was under normal test day conditions (for example you weren't on a rocky boat or at a dance party while doing it), but still possible of course.

This is assuming however you actually follow a study regimen and throw your all into it.

I plan to sit in October. This is just some anecdotal evidence from my own experience:

Diagnostic (strict test conditions): 160
Study time so far: 9 weeks. Used Manhattan, 7sage, LSAT Trainer, Cambridge. Average study of about 30 hours per week.
Last 5 PT average: 175 (+15)
Most recent PT: 177 (+17)

I will echo the point above: the diagnostic is only as representative as the conditions under which you took it. Also, large improvements are easier the lower your initial diagnostic. It is easier (relatively) to go from 140-160, than from 170-175 for instance.

I've definitely had students in the 140s end up in the 170s.

I'm taking the test in October.

My diag was 149. I had the most innate ability on RC, while LR and LG were absolutely terrible (-16 in LR and -13 in LG).

Since then, RC has become, on average, a -3, and I feel I'm approaching -2 territory. My general LR range is between -1 and -5. And LG is in the -0/-4 range, and trust me, I hate that volatility. Anyway, I've been regularly PTing in the low/mid-170s for a couple months now, and I'm by no means a natural at this.

I've been studying the right way since June - the 'right way' for me encompasses MLSAT for LR, PS for LG, MLSAT for RC (RC was much less predictable for me score-wise earlier in my prep), and the Cambridge packets for LR and LG. If you count my halfassed studying prior to June and starting in April, in which I drilled a bunch of mixed sections I wasn't adequately prepared for and some game types here and there (the one thing I did right then), then I've been studying for roughly 5 months. If anything, given my experience, I think 5 to 6 months should be sufficient for most people. I really feel like I'm hitting close to my full potential at the right time, and that there are still slight gains to be made all around (maybe a point in each section).

I'd like to add that the first couple PTs I took after the diag, I scored 160 and then 167. Following those, I was stuck, and then I started studying 'the right way' as I mentioned, and that's when the 170s became feasible. I suppose PS LR was good enough to get me to the 160s, but I needed MLSAT for the 170s.

Yes, those stats where retakers only average a 2.x score increase are an elaborate flame. I sat for the June '12 test, scored *<160. sitting again in October and I'm nearing the 170 threshold 2 weeks out (167/169/169 last 3 PTs, 170 was just a careless mistake away)

It takes time, but it can be done.
