In what order should I take practice tests?

Postby proviso » Sat Sep 07, 2013 11:20 pm

I have all the prep tests from 7-68, and I'm planning to take the December LSATs. is there a suggested order to do the tests? Is it worth doing ptests before PT40?

Thanks!

Most people drill from 1-38 (from Cambridge packets) and then do tests 39-69 (though for you it will be 39-70).

I'm taking the October test, and this has been my schedule for the last month:

PT 68 8/29/2013
PT 57 8/31/2013
PT 49 9/1/2013
PT 50 9/4/2013
PT 69 9/7/2013
PT 61 9/10/2013
PT 66 9/12/2013
PT 68 9/15/2013
PT 62 9/17/2013
PT 64 9/19/2013
PT 65 9/22/2013
PT 63 9/24/2013
PT 67 9/26/2013
PT XX 9/29/2013
PT XX 10/1/2013
PT XX 10/3/2013
PT 70 10/5/2013

"PT XX" is a repeat from before.

I like jumping around between really new and newish tests (as in, around in the 60s) so that if there are wording differences and stuff, I'm not caught completely off-guard two weeks before the test.

I recommend using the first 40 in sectional practice as noted above, and then mix up the tests as 6X, 5X, 4X, 6X, 5X, 4X.

A lot of people take them in order, and honestly while you're going to be at a disadvantage relative to people who mix up the test order, you'll still be at a tremendous advantage relative to people who didn't take all the PTs and comprehensively review. Anyone who has taken most or all of the PTs will tell you that a 6X test "feels" different from a 5X, which feels different from a 4X, etc.

You aren't taking the test in December, 2001--You're taking it in December, 2013. The test has evolved in those twelve years and it's important to have a feel for how the test is now. A lot of people take them in order and get to the newest tests at the end and get flustered. If you prep with only material from the 90's, then that will become your point of reference. Instead, mix in the freshest material as well so that you can take each PT with an eye for how it is different from the way the test is in its most modern iteration.

To be clear, I know plenty of people who scored well into the 99th percentile by taking the PTs in order, but I think there is a small, tangible advantage to mixing up the PT order. The worst thing you can do is delay prepping because you are unsure how to best make use of your 70 PTs. You can always repeat them later, and in fact I believe there is tremendous value in repeating tests. If you take PT68 in your first couple weeks of testing, you can repeat it again a few months later. Even if you recall a few questions, you'll have forgotten most of it, and when you review your mistakes it is very revealing when using repeat material.

I did 1-44 then I decided to mix it up and go 69 on down i'm at PT 60 now and will go from 60 on down to 45 just to mix things up. Got 22 days to do the last 16 now which should be alright. Hope you've already established a strong foundation too - I suggest Manhattan LSAT forums and 7sage to check your answers afterwards - blind review is almost as important as the test itself. GL
