Months ago, I went to a high school reunion and said to friends I was PTing in the high 160s. Several people had already taken the test, and none of them had anything below 170; they furrowed their brows and said to me, "Well, which section are you struggling with? There's got to be something you can do to improve that score, because you should really be PTing consistently in the 170s." I felt like the dumbass of the group.

Trinity, Horace Mann, or Andover?

Haha I almost went to Horace Mann and then was like jk.

Nope, alma mater is in Korea.

I believe you. I studied at Yonsei U when I was studying abroad there and the amount of gunning I saw was ridiculous. It was hilarious because I had a group project in one of the classes and they essentially did the entire thing....

With diligent preparation you can get yourself consistently into 170+ territory. Beyond this, luck plays the primary role for most people. I believe pretty firmly that most 175+ scores are the result of this 170+ pool who just got lucky. My median PT score was low 170X; with good luck I got 177 a few times and even a 180. With bad luck I got high 16X. The luck just boils down mostly to those inevitable 50/50 guesses going one way or the other. I ended up getting a 171 on the real thing, but about half of the questions I missed were 50/50 guesses. If I'd gotten them all right I'd have scored a 177. If I'd gotten them all wrong I'd have scored 16X.

For every 100 people who test at the same level as me (roughly, 3 or 4 answers definitely wrong, 91 or 92 definitely correct, and 5 or 6 50/50 guesses), about 2 or 3 or 4 will reach high 17X territory. Whether I'm one of those guys or not just comes down to luck.

Yes, some brilliant minds consistently score this high, but I think most 175+ scores are guys like me who got lucky (at the statistical expense of guys like me who score 16X).

Someone with more knowledge of the bell curve numbers, feel free to call bullshit on this; I'd love to stand corrected if I'm wrong.

I don't know the LSAT scores of all of the 0Ls I knew in college, but I'm assuming most of them were pretty low. They all went to TTTs except for 1 who was a URM and got into a T14. I actually found my URM friend on LSN, got a 154.

I'll call bullshit on that. There's some swinginess, but if you're relying on any "50:50" questions to get your high score, you don't understand the question well enough. Some people probably get that high due to luck, but I'd say most who are there consistently just know the test.

I retook my 164 while working at a midlaw firm in which none of the partners went to top schools. When told how great 164 was, I just said thanks. When they found out I was retaking, they thought I was being ridiculous (as did my parents). Now that I am going to a t14, everyone thinks its cool and likes talking about it.

Yup, several (three or four close friends and maybe ten people I just "know"). And several people who failed to break 150 ..and yet still applied to schools.

No one from my inner-circle at a regional state school got below a 160.

This literally just took place. My girlfriend was telling her guy friend I took the lsat. He told her that he got a 179 and has a 3.9 gpa but isn't going to law school.

He told her to tell me to get an app called lsat train or something because it helped him a lot.

Seems like quite the lie to tell.

He thinks the -1 makes it believable, hahaha.

The test is normalized. Some people will do better, others worse. Who does well and who does poorly poorly correlates to how much work one puts in. If it correlated well, then it's somewhat possible the test wouldn't be normalized anymore--everyone would try harder and half would get above a 165.

All that said: you can get above a 170 from a 120 if you try hard enough. But notice the modalities. "Can." "You." The sentence of three periodic sentences ago holds even if there are people who, individually, cannot get above a 170 no matter how hard they try. "You" still "can." Maybe. ("Maybe" and "can" play well together.)

What does all this mean? It means it's the LSAT, you want to be a lawyer, try as hard as fuck...but don't demand of yourself the impossible. And tell us what your score turns out to be. But you should be taking practice tests until your eyes bleed. (Why are you on TLS right now?)

That's the only way I know how to surprise one's self with awesome performance. Focusing on how you want to get a 170 but are not--that will get you 160.

P.S. take a 5 day break before the actual test. And by "break" I mean take only one practice test per day and by "take" I mean only if your eyes are bleeding.

I read TLS all the time for motivation and study tips and it seems like everyone is getting 170s and going to dream schools. Don't get my wrong - those are my very aspirations as well. I just realized though, i don't know ANYONE with a 170+ in real life, and I live in a major NE city. This thread isn't really a question since the numbers are clear of how many people score in the 99th percentile each year ect.

But does anyone else feel like an asshole when they speak to their current law school friends (who are not at a t14) and say things like "yea i'm going for 170 or bust..."

Not a 0L BUT,

170 or bust may sound elitist to some, but anyone who knows anything about job prospects will think it sounds like" I don't want to be jobless and heavily indebted in four years."

I have two friends who turned down Harvard Law School to do PhDs instead. One said if she got into Yale she would have gone. They both had 178 and solid GPA ( don't know the exact numbers but magna undergrads.).
Pretty much they had other options they preferred and decided they didn't really want to practice law. Also they are not money obsessed.

I think there are more people like this than you might guess. I doubt any of them would use it to try to impress girls in a bar ( at least not while sober.)
