3 Takes?

Postby wtrc » Tue Jul 02, 2013 10:49 am

Yes, I know there are threads asking similar questions, especially now. Asking anyway.

Took June 2011, got a 166. Took June 2013, got a 167. I was PTing around 174 or 175 this time around, with 2 180's and a range of 172-180. On the actual test, the methods I had made for LG (hypotheticals if needed, etc.) just went out the window, and I choked on games (went -7, somehow, I'm still a bit in shock about it). Other sections were -1/-3 for LR, -4 for RC.

How bad of a negative soft factor is 3 takes? I have a 3.84 GPA (4.0 when I graduated was recalculated to that), and probably above average softs. I also work full-time, so don't have an unlimited amount of time to study, but I think I just need to maintain skills and work on test anxiety, so it's not like I'm learning this from anything close to scratch.

Yeah, yesterday sucked. Can't believe I'm actually thinking about retaking. Kind of humbling to see that score yesterday.

It's not a huge deal. Make sure, as you're going through it, to trust the process man. Those skills that helped you get a 180 on PTs are still applicable on the real thing.

I'm basically in the same position at this fella here (Got a 166 after PTing in the 174-176 range with a 179 and 180 thrown in, -8 on LG yesterday even though I had been going -0/-1 on PTs). Are my hopes for Columbia or NYU out the window with three takes?

You're out at Yale and maybe Stanford. No one else seems to care.

Seems like a lot depends on what you make of it. I think something like 7% of people take it a third time, which is pretty rare. Speculating, I would say admissions people would want a big improvement on your third take, because taking it three times suggests a boatload of studying/investment in the test. As for the actual test, just work on remaining calm when you sputter. I did so much better with that in June than in Feb, and it got me results.

Is there any data on how taking the test 3 times affects admissions cycles? I went 169->170 and am considering a third take. Since my first two scores are pretty good and will get me consideration from every school outside the top 6, will my application be looked down upon by these schools if I take it a third time? I'm aiming for the Penn JD/MBA program and can probably get in with my current scores, but I feel like a successful retake could get me some scholarship money which is much needed because of the ~$300k COA.

Most (anecdotal) evidence suggests that, outside of YS, the amount of takes has little effect. I don't know if there's enough data to come up with anything conclusive.
