The best pencils are useless if your sharpener is TTT.
A lot of people rave about the KUM Long, but I've had terrible luck with mine. All it does is eat up the pencil and break the tip. Maybe I'm forcing it too hard.

You may want to try the Alvin Brass Bullet pencil sharpner.

If you feel the need for one that will hold the shavings, they make a nice inkwell model.

Good news: settled on the Tri-con! What a great pencil; thanks to all who recommended it.

bad news: that sharpener Tri-cons come with is teh suck. Anybody recommend a sharpener that fits the Tri-con and actually gives it a nice, long point?

Take the cover off so you can see what you're doing . Make sure you don't overdo the sharpening (I.e pass the stop indicator).

Do you happen to have a link to the inkwell model? All the versions I can find do not have anything to catch the shavings. However, if it is that good, I don't care if it catches the shavings or not.

I tried that and still no luck. Maybe I got a lemon.

There's a new podcast about wooden pencils. The show notes contain good links and recommendations.

Tried the black ticons...just didn't sit well with me. The lead was a little too soft.

Found these bad boys and they are my go to: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004TUGZQ ... ot_redir=1

Staedtler Rally #2 pencils. Awesome colors...alternating blue and white. The firmness of the lead is perfect for me. Plus the name..."rally" reminds me of coming from behind for a big W or something. Just helps get me in the zone.

The eraser is a little too hard, so I use the ticon erasers that you can stick on the end.

They provided pencils for our property midterm. I grabbed one from the box and, behold, it was a Black Mirado Warrior. I started to giggle uncontrollably.

It was definitely better than the Ticon Blacks. I now regret my life.

Warriors were SPS because they (1) did not erase and (2) weren't hexagons so they rolled around on the table.

Idk man. I took all my LSATs with Black Ticons and I never got that 170. But I took my midterm with the MBW, and finished top 10%. Coincidence? I think not.

The Dixon Oriole is the greatest pencil ever made.

I'll still rock a Ticonderoga but I pine for the Oriole.

If you are going to be placing an order to try out new pencils, you should stop over at Jetpens.com and take a look at the Palomino Blackwing Pearl or my favorite the Mitsubishi Hi-Uni (HB).

+1 on JetPens. It's an amazing site! I use the Mitsubishi Hi-Uni pencils too. I'll be taking a box of those pencils (they erase so cleanly) + a few Palomino Blackwings (love how smoothly they write & how dark the lead is) + a Pentel Ain eraser to the exam. I'm tempted to buy the Palomino sharpener b/c I've heard great things about it, but I'll see. I would rather get a few more pencils for that price (I currently use Staedtler Mars Lumographs to drill with - they're pretty affordable and write smooth/erase well too)
I have never shopped so hard for a pencil before.

Just bought the Palomino sharpener and it's pretty good (I'd been using a Staedtler which ate up a lot of the pencil length). I brought mostly Blackwings to the September test and found that they weren't great for bubbling, though. The lead felt weirdly scratchy on the scantron paper (but it worked really excellently for diagramming quickly in the test booklet!)

Pro tip for the sharpener: Nordstrom sells it for $7.50 and the shipping is free, unlike on Jet Pens and Pencils.com.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
