My proctor kept bragging that if anyone forgot pencils he had some that he stole from elementary school children (in part an attempt to show that the use of pencils is either juvenile or dated).

TCR is black Ticonderogas if you are trying to start a tiny campfire.

TCR for which pencils to use on the LSAT is Palomino HBs or Blackwings.

So I think I'm going to get a package of Palominos (along with the Kum Long Point sharpener), but I can't decide which ones: Golden Bear, 602s, HB, etc. I tend to hold my pencils with a death-grip, so does anyone have suggestions?

FACK I knew my pencils were the reason for crap performance. Damn it Dixon #2's and your alluring 75 cent for 8 pencils deal.

If you get them from pencils.com, i would recommend ordering General's semi-hex as well. I tried like 20 different pencils and think the semi-hex is the best overall pencil for test taking. Great lead, eraser, etc. The only downside with the semi-hex is point retention (just like the blackwings) but since you're able to bring in as many pencils as you want to the test, that really isn't a problem. The blackwing erasers as well as all the other palominos kinda suck, so if you do end up getting them, get some of those eraser tip things as well.

I'm really enjoying my Palomino Blackwings (the lead is wonderfully soft), but the erasers leave much to be desired. I'm being forced to use a Pentel Hi-Polymer standalone eraser, which can be unweildy in the midst of a particularly intricate LG section.

I think the Palomino erasers are more for decorative effect than anything. :x

Golden Bears are manufactured at the Musgrave Pencil Factory and have the MPF trademark sharp edges to the barrel. You can feel every panel of the hexagon distinctly. You might not enjoy it if you have a death-grip. The Blackwing and HB pencils are manufactured in Japan and you will immediately notice the difference in quality compared to standard "American" brand pencils made in Mexico/China. The Blackwing 602's have the best point retention in the Palomino line-up, imo, and one of the best leads of any general writing pencil. The Palomino HB's are a close second to the 602s. I've never had any problem with the erasers as some have mentioned. Perhaps the darkness of the Blackwing and Palomino HB leads requires a little more erasing, leading some to conclude the erasers aren't as good.

You're probably right about the erasers. they might work pretty well for actually erasing.. i just don't like the texture, the way it feels when you erase. Even ticons seem to erase smoother, but i bet im the only one who's annoyed by it.

Nah, I also am not a fan of the 602s' erasers. They don't erase well and I don't like the texture either. The HBs' erasers are slightly better but not stellar. I just use a separate eraser and/or eraser caps.

ETA: I also think the 602s' point retention is horrible. I like the smoothness, don't get me wrong, but the lead is too soft for me to use for testing/writing anything longer than a short paragraph. I like my sharp points :|

How did this thread end up on page 7? Don't you guys know there's a war on there's a test tomorrow? And no one is panicking about their pencil choice? My god, I shudder to think of what pieces of wooden dreck you all will be carrying in your ziplocs tomorrow morning.
