What is a mechanical eraser?

Also, there are battery-powered spinning erasers for old-school pencil drafters, which would obviously not be allowed.

I own one of those. But what about it is mechanical?
It's just a plastic holder that slides. There are no mechanics involved.
The manufacturer does not advertise it as mechanical.

Of course, I won't take mine. It is noisy. But I'm just curious how they can label it mechanical.
