From the research I've done it seems like those who are scared about taking the test late in the cycle have overstated the actual disadvantages. Those with higher LSAT /gpa indexes get reviewed sooner and having a higher index is worth having to retake in dec if earlier scores aren't great. The disadvantage of applying later is gambling on a higher LSAT and applying earlier will give you a marginal advantage if you already have the numbers. The reason being schools want to get back sooner to the best applicants and those who are relying on soft factors will probably not be lost by having been read later.
