Logical Reasoning
I am preparing to take the December 2012 LSAT and I need to know what's the best strategy for attacking the Logical reasoning section.
Should I
(1) Read the Passage, read the question, then answer question
or
(2) Read the question, read the passage, re-read the question, then answer the question
I would appreciate any advice you might have.

This has been debated for years. Purchase the Logical reading bible. Do 10 sections of LR and find what's best for you. Good luckDazedAndConfused77 wrote:I am preparing to take the December 2012 LSAT and I need to know what's the best strategy for attacking the Logical reasoning section.

This is NOT a debate. Read it IN ORDER. Passage > question > answers

Truth!
HOW you read the passage is very important, so if you need to break it down to a few words at a time and keep a moderate pace to digest everything, go ahead. That's what helped me. Over time, you'll be able to pick up the pace, but I do recall in Logic Bible that there just isn't enough time to read the passage, read the question, read the passage again, read the question again, then answer

Re: Logical Reasoning
I would say it's a debate and varies between individuals. I used to be a die hard "read everything in order!!" advocate, but I was recently in a LR rut missing exactly 3 LR per test for five straight tests. So I switched it up during the last two timed PTs I did, and I went -1 and then -0 in LR. Needless to say, I'm now a fan of reading the question first. That being said, I think it works better to read the question first once you already have a very firm grasp on all the question types. I don't really balance anything in my head when I'm reading the stimulus. I read the question stem, think "flaw" or "necessary assumption" or whatever, and read the stimulus. That's a lot easier than trying to remember something like "okay I'm looking for a way that would most justify the conclusion of this passage."
Summary: figure out what works for you.

Re: Logical Reasoning
I found my score went up when I didn't even read the stimulus. No guessing required, just use lots of logic to find the right answer.

You should not have to reread the question.DazedAndConfused77 wrote: (2) Read the question, read the passage,re-read the question, then answer the question

Re: Logical Reasoning
I read the question stem first, make a one/two letter mark by it (S = strengthen, NA = necessary assumption, R = role, I = infer, etc... you'll probably wanna make up your own abbreviations), and then the stimulus. If I ever forget what the question stem is asking for, which usually doesn't happen, then I just glance at the big letter next to the stem.
The real advantage of this is giving me a (perhaps superficial) sense of being mechanical. It's just a quick mental reminder of what my task is going into the stimulus, which then causes me to be a more active reader.
Also, both Manhattan LSAT's and Velocity's strategies have you read the question stem first, and those are the primary materials I am using.
I should note that I usually have to re-read the stem (after stimulus) if the stem is particularly different.
