Watching a comedy is the only thing I can see as being beneficial, just to wind down after a long day and laugh. Cut down TV altogether

I watched Real Housewives pretty much every night while studying for the LSAT.

LOLOL wow. Just wow. This is pretty much me exactly. If im not studying, i'm watching King of the Hill. If i'm not watching King of the Hill, i'm studying.bp shinners wrote:This might be a bad analogy, as I may be an unrepresentative sample, but when I studied for the LSAT, all I did besides that was watch King of the Hill and Transformers. So 'bad' TV (finger quotes since both of those shows are awesome) certainly isn't sufficient to ruin your prep.

Trailer Park Boys is the secret to successful prep. Although, TPB is awesome tv, so it isn't exactly pertinent to this discussion.

I wouldn't worry too much about unwinding after putting in some serious and constructive studying. After all, you do need to watch out and not burn out. In the long-term crap TV can probably not so much make you dumber as re-adjust your expectations and make you less intellectually curious/creative/etc.
I'm probably not a very good reference point because I watch virtually no TV, of mainstream stuff only say 30 Rock or Modern Family on Netflix and when I was studying for the test I don't really remember having watched any TV. I think I mostly let off steam by hanging out and drinking with my buddies.

Don't know if this will help or not, but I disconnected the cable in my apartment, and deactivated all social networking sites. I wanted to have the least amount of distractions as possible.

Yes, shutting out the things that make you happy is surely the path to a well functioning mind.Nova wrote:Thats my 1L game plan tooEnde wrote:Don't know if this will help or not, but I disconnected the cable in my apartment, and deactivated all social networking sites. Who said tv in my apartment or social networking sites made me happy? Could the tv be for informational purposes? Could the social networking be used for informational purposes?

The conclusion is properly drawn if the argument assumes that....omninode wrote:Yes, shutting out the things that make you happy is surely the path to a well functioning mind.Nova wrote:Thats my 1L game plan tooEnde wrote:Don't know if this will help or not, but I disconnected the cable in my apartment, and deactivated all social networking sites. I just know that I would go crazy if I didn't allow myself to watch tv and play online from time to time. That's just me, I guess.Ende wrote:omninode wrote:Yes, shutting out the things that make you happy is surely the path to a well functioning mind.Nova wrote:Thats my 1L game plan tooEnde wrote:Don't know if this will help or not, but I disconnected the cable in my apartment, and deactivated all social networking sites. Better question is "What could I be doing with that time." Recreational reading is almost certainly better...

FWIW, the people who studied all the time weren't those who did the best in my class. The people who studied an appropriate amount and then enjoyed their leisure time with friends ended up doing just as well (or better) and ended up being better in interviews. The more pressure you put on yourself, the more likely you are to freak out and challenge the OCI guy to a cite-off, or write a ridiculous tangent on an inconsequential issue on an issue spotter.Nova wrote:Thats my 1L game plan tooEnde wrote:Don't know if this will help or not, but I disconnected the cable in my apartment, and deactivated all social networking sites. Don't put the 1L on a pedestal. You're putting the 1L on a pedestal.

Re: Can Crap TV ruin your prep?
i dunno, man. i think to some extent it helps. i didn't get cable during 1L, and i quit tls. did i study all day every day with zero distractions? hell no. i still went out, played xbox, fucked around on the internet, etc. but by taking away two of my biggest distractions, studying "an appropriate amount" became much easier.bp shinners wrote:FWIW, the people who studied all the time weren't those who did the best in my class.
