What is the Average Prep Time for 170+?

I am asking for "Average", so please do not come up with: "It varies from person to person" etc.

I think the responses to this question can be averaged out, and that will be really helpful to many people!

I can't think of an inane enough response for a question which is completely impossible for anyone to answer.

At the risk of giving an inane response, I studied lightly for about two and half months (a few questions a day and a practice test every other weekend) and more heavily for a couple of weeks (about half a practice test a day).

The average depends on your GPA.

3.9+: Average studying for 170; 80 hours.
3.7-3.9: 200 hours
3.5-3.7: 700 hours
3.3-3.5: 1600 hours
>3.3: varies too widely to be statistically significant.

As you can see, the hours grow exponentially as the GPA decreases.

I don't know what the average time would be but IMO if you invest more than 100 hrs studying/prepping and still aren't there you're probably not studying correctly or won't see any significant improvement beyond that.

I think after awhile the law of diminishing returns becomes a factor. If you have the innate potential to score above a 170, 100 hours (35 hrs of drills and 65 hrs of PTs) should do the trick. If you truly are not a good test taker, and you do not start to see consistent, noticeable improvements after the first 100 hours, excessive studying won't help as much as good health, a clear mind and a little luck.

Dude some people diagnostic in the mid to high 160s and just have to learn a couple set ups for games in order to test in the 170s. Some people study for a month and get it and some study 4 months and are happy with a 160. Who fucking cares?

What is the goal you are trying to accomplish with your question?

If you are trying to collect data to figure out how much time you or anyone else should or needs to spend preparing in order to score 170+, your goal is flawed in many ways.

Only roughly two percent (2%) of people that have taken the LSAT since 1991 have scored 170 or above no matter how much time they spent preparing to take the test, whether it be just a few hours or hundreds of hours. Plus, an average represents an entire group of people, not particular individuals.

The information you are seeking is unavailable. Seeking sample data on an LSAT study internet forum is a flawed method of collecting reliable statistical data.

The LSAT is a measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills. Many of the skills tested by the LSAT, especially basic English grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills are ones that test-takers are expected to have acquired/developed during grade school, middle school, high school and college education.

The underlying logical concepts and relationships the questions are based on that the test questions revolve around are basic/simple logic 101 concepts that can be learned with LSAT specific preparation as long as you have decent English grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension skills from prior education. In other terms, if you have those skills in place from prior education, then it is just a matter of learning the format of the LSAT, the logical concepts repeatedly tested, the questions type, effective logically based strategies and practicing and reviewing test questions to get into 'LSAT mode thinking'.

There is no magic X #of prep hours = Y score range formula. You specified up front that you didn't want to hear the truth that it varies from person to person or why, but here it are some of the reasons whether you care to consider them or not.

Good luck if you are preparing to take the test and put in as much QUALITY preparation as it takes to hopefully reach your goal/maximum potential score. It is a test that people can learn how to take to significantly improve their score come test-day no matter where they start as long as they have decent English skills as described above.

Some people score int he high 160s cold and spend a week learning games. Some people study for 3 months and never break 165. What do you want? It's a stupid question. If OP wants to score 17x, OP needs to do what's right for him or her. If, upon being told, that it might take 3 or 4 months, and then OP is like 'Fuck this shit', then wtf man.

I can only offer my experience. I think if your diagnostic score is similar, the study time could be comparable.

One month to go from 160 to 166. One month break. Another month to 170.

Study time: 15 hours/wk. 10 for PTs, 5 for study/review.

Medium score of LSAT takers is 150. In other words, an average person scores ~150. Thus, OP question can be simplified to ~ this: "How long does it take to improve from 150 to 170 or by 20 points?"

You can do it in one month or less. You can do it in 4 weekends.

I will add to the list of averages -- but it took me a week to go from 165 (diagnostic) to 170. It has been really hard to move up from there.

the correct answer is FOREVER.

for an average person on average it is simply impossible to improve 20 points. as far as I remember repeat takers score +/-2-3 points.
