151 LSAT and I'm not quitting
Hi all,
I've been a lurker on this forum for almost a year now. I took the LSAT in June and got a 157. It wasn't as high as my practice tests, and I decided to retake. I realized that I had bought a bad study guide at the beginning and it had screwed me up. I switched to powerscore books and worked through them. I studied pretty well.
At least I thought I had. I scored a 151. I probably should have cancelled, but that's neither here nor there.
Goals: I want to get into University of South Carolina school of law, preferably with a scholarship. I want to either practice at the local level or join the JAGs. I am walking every day to get in shape and am eating healthier.
Background: I am a former elementary music teacher who has moved from Texas to South Carolina to be with the woman I love. It's a hell of a change, and it's got me scared sh!tless. I love South Carolina, and I want to stay here.
I think I know what I did wrong, and I think I know the errors in my studying process. I think I can do better. My question to people here is: Do you think I should retake this test?
Thanks.

If you think you can do better odds are you really can. Don't be afraid of sitting a cycle out. It's really not that big of a deal. Just keep studying cause the test is learnable.Scotusnerd wrote:Hi all,

Re: 151 LSAT and I'm not quitting
This is actually giving me some hope. I walked out of dec 10 because of nerves and cancelled. studied pretty hard, well kind of hard for Oct 11 and got a 158- a total of 10 points lower than my pt average. I'm thinking about re-taking in june. My gpa is a 3.9 so I don't want to waste it on a 158.lakers3peat wrote:cold diag: 147

Thanks guys. I'm definately gonna retake. I'm going to sign up for the study group and let you know how I do. I think I need other people to motivate me to study instead of just fighting against myself.

Don't quit man. My first test I scored a 148 without studying. Took again and scored a 154 with a little studying. Took again and got a 158. Today, on my fourth attempt, I got a 166. Sooo stoked. Never quit. You can do whatever you set your mind to!!!

151 (cold diag) --> 173 (real thing)
Took me nine months and a lot of sweat and blood.
You need to create a very systematic and effective approach to figuring out exactly what went wrong on test day and fixing it. Everything on this test can be practiced; you can even practice "getting in the zone." Good luck and I know you can do it. Half of the battle is fought in the mind, and your head seems to be in the right place.

Re: 151 LSAT and I'm not quitting
I would recommend sitting this cycle out if possible while you prep. It'll be your third exam so you're going to want to make it count, and December might be a little soon. Plus, scholarships are typically given out on a rolling basis and it might be too late at that point.
What's the goal score, btw? I don't know much about USC but I would imagine a 162ish and 3.9 might get you some money.

Agreed. Sit this one out and make the third count because you don't want to do a fourth.seancris wrote:I would recommend sitting this cycle out if possible while you prep. Re: 151 LSAT and I'm not quitting
My goal is to get a few scholarships. I want to get a 164 or so if possible. I have a 3.6 GPA (3.8 technically, but LSAT moved it down) and a fairly unique backstory. I'm an elementary music teacher who started out as a percussionist and turned into a pipe organist. I don't want anything fancy, and I don't need to get into any top law schools. My parents did the whole Yale thing for their graduate work, and I don't think I can follow in their footsteps on that.

My three LSAT scores:
Dec '09 (160) --> Dec '10 (155) --> Oct '11 (170+)
You can DEFINITELY do it. Good luck!

I did really poorly on the LSAT too and nearly had a panic attack thinking my future was over. But thanks for the inspiration!

Retake if you are willing to put in the work & are not burnt out. Consider taking a course from Powerscore or Testmasters or Manhattan.

Re: 151 LSAT and I'm not quitting
Hey folks. I've worked out my plan after doing some more snooping. On weekdays, I'm going to warmup, do one section a day timed, and then study the problems I had. On weekends, I'm going to take a full test under test conditions, and work on improving my score that way. This test is becoming so familiar that I think too much theoretical crap is getting in my way now. I just need to do the test, under real conditions.
Hopefully this'll help me move forward. Thanks for all of the encouragement! I really appreciate it.

The test is really learnable. I think the most important thing is to review your mistakes after you are done with practice tests and analyze why you picked the answer choices that you did and what makes them wrong and from that to identify your weaknesses and patterns. The advice I found really helpful on this site is to identify the four wrong answer choices instead of looking for the right answer. I am sure that with hard work, you will be able to break mid 160's. Good luck!

Oct 11: 169 and I'm still trying for that last point
If anyone could give me some tips on how to reuse practice tests? Do I just redo them as a timed practice test or break them out into sections? I'm planning on a retake in Feb. and to the OP keep going I'd kill for that GPA

Re: 151 LSAT and I'm not quitting
hey, have you actually done all 62 exams?
I did.. I started doing the first book of 10 they released, then skipped to the next 10, then test time was coming close so I did the most recent ones etc.
What I would advise doing is taking PT 1, PT 3, PT 8 etc. the really early ones. If you've already taken those then maybe not but make sure you have exhausted all test materials before you start looking at new stuff. After you've exhausted all materials, start with the ones that you took the longest ago as they will be the least fresh. As test day approaches, start mixing in the oldest ones with the newest ones so you get practice with the "new LSAT".
Don't get too caught up on having seen questions already. Believe me, I've been there... It's more important that you are analyzing your mistakes and finding out why the right answers are right, wrong answers are wrong. http://www.manhattanlsat.com/forums/log ... 41a6c68de0 The Manhattan forums are a great free resource that i Highly advise using.

Re: 151 LSAT and I'm not quitting
Hello,
No I haven't done all 62 exams. I'm noticing a significant difference between the earlier ones and the later ones. When I took the first Supertest one earlier this week I scored a 167, but when I took the Preptest 52 today, I scored a 163. These were untimed, by the way. I'm going to start timing myself next week +10 minutes and then working my way down.
Given my time constraints, I'm going to focus on the most recent tests first and work my way backwards after that. Logic Reasoning sections seem to have changed the most since the 1990s.
