extant

It came up on a PT I did. I was able to guess the meaning correctly, but I wasn't sure. I looked it up after I finished the test and put it to memory.

Got an electronic Webster dictionary for myself.I add every word I am unsure about and review during the work commute. It is helping a lot.Words do repeat and its worth the effort esp in RC when the question asks to describe author's reaction or replace words in a sentence etc.

I'm convinced, LSAC actively tests vocabulary on the test, you may not notice it most of the time, but many times the meaning of a paragraph/stimulus/answer choice hinges on a single word, and sometimes the meaning cannot be understood from context. you can take this to the bank.

Don't know why you assume English is not my first language. I actually was born and raised in the Orange County area just like you guy.

I wasn't assuming anything, I was talking about myself.

I am in the same boat. Although I'd consider myself a more or less fluent speaker, Reading Comp is kicking my ass.

I used to think the LSAT was not a vocabulary test, but when I started teaching LSAT classes, I quickly realized otherwise. For people scoring above say, 160, the vocabulary is probably not causing them any problems. But for people starting out below 150 or so (way more than half of test-takers), there are frequent high level words that can make a sentence's meaning unclear, both in the stimulus and the answer choices. That is, if your not comfortable with their meaning. The LSAT is to a great degree, a test of linguistic ability, so it's not surprising that people who are scoring near the top of the scale (160+) don't find the vocabulary challenging. That's just a hurdle they've been able to jump over.

I'd say freerice is a better aid to helping your mind work quickly and efficiently at comprehending and synthesizing information than actually building your vocabulary. It also helps your deductive reasoning in terms of figuring out what words mean. This concept is similar to that of using sudolu as a supplement to logic games.

Add "posterity" to the list. The only word I can remember that I literally could not answer an LR question because of not knowing what it meant.

It seems like the words you're mentioning were on my SAT vocab list. Look into websites that explain SAT vocab. Also, if you want to improve retention, there used to be a free Princeton Review vocab minute podcast (full disclosure: I teach for PR). It may still exist and they're cute, 1 minute long songs that drill the word into your head.
Ex. "An ingenue is someone who would never tell a lie.
She simply is an innocent, and never is a guy."

A lot of these are "SAT" words (my teachers used to have us learn 10-13 words every week from an SAT words book during middle school). There's a lot of supplements out there for learning them. You might try using some, though I don't have any to recommend.

the other thing to look out for is common words used in a nontraditional way. words like debatable can mean inviting debate, or it could mean questionable (i.e. bad).

OP, I'm curious, what is your major in college? Why do you want to go to law school?
