Reasonable goal based on 1st practice test

I just recently completed my first practice test and was a bit disappointed with my score. I have not studied for the test at all and was just using this as a barometer to see how feasible certain scores would be. I scored a 156 but am hoping that I might be able to push up to 170. Time was my major issue (I guessed on 19 questions) so I am hopeful that this is something I will be able to correct with practice and studying. I should also note that I probably will not take the test until June 2013 so I have plenty of time.

How did you all score in relation to your first cold practice test?

without any prior knowledge of the test, that is a solid score. I jumped more than 10 points from my initial to my actual score...though I was PTing much higher than that. 170 is attainable given the amount of time you have. The LSAT doesnt test how smart you are, it tests how well you know the test. And honestly, after a 165, a lot of it is mainly luck...if you get a test that plays to your strengths as opposed to your weaknesses. GOOD LUCK ;)

I went from a cold 151 to a 176, first time. But I studied for almost a year, intensely. You never really know what score you have in you. Just be prepared to work really hard, and know that your entire career is largely decided by how you do.

You can definitely accomplish it, OP. :)

But don't let the TLS LSAT cult get to you. You shouldn't try to score a 180: you should try to score the best score you can. If you go into the test thinking that you're a complete failure at life if you don't score 170+, guarantee you'll get psyched out and not score as well as you could.

Hate to put it in such a cliche manner, but...do your best.

I went from a 162 in december cold to a 173 first attempt in June, so that's roughly the same. However, I was stuck at the 168 mark for like 5 of those 6 months. Cracking into the sub-10 wrong mark is a steep climb, but it's very doable.

I went from a 157 to a 166 and really didnt study super hard and tested under my average.

156 is a pretty solid diagnostic considering like 65 to 70 percent of test day takers dont do that well.

You could easily improve above a 170 if you really dedicate yourself to it.

That has about 100 odd Diagnostics vs. Test Day Scores

I think that, for most people on here (who were willing to report), the very unofficial average is something like a 10 or 12 point increase for people whose diagnostic was in the 155-160 range. Doing a reasonable amount of prep, 166 is definitely within range from a 156 start, and 171 would probably be a good goal. Study really hard to get there and anything over that is icing on the cake. Or what you will. Use all the resources on here; also, I understand the Bibles are really really helpful (never looked at them though). What was your score breakdown (as in, how many did you miss on each section)?

156 is awesome. I went 147 --> Bibles + 30 PTs --> 168.

Just out of curiosity, is there a poll on how many PTs tls'ers go through for prep?

I was 19/23 on LG. 18/18 before running out of time. 35/50 on LR. 33/41 before running out of time. 17/27 on RC. 16/22 before running out of time.

I went from 156 cold diagnostic to 169 in June. It sounds like you're in great shape given that you lost as many points as you did because of time. Just becoming familiar with the question types and learning some basic techniques will make you much faster. You have plenty of time so make sure you pace yourself and learn the material in the Bibles as thoroughly as possible.

My cold diagnostic was 157, and I ended up scoring a 173. I studied for 3-4 months, but I didn't study as intensively as I probably should have. It's definitely possible to make a large jump. Time with logic games, for example, will come with repetition and practice.

It's totally possible. My cold test was 159 and I got a 170 on the June 2011 test. I put roughly 4 months of hard core studying and am studying for another three months for a retake. If you have a full year to study, it's definitely possible.
