PT51 S3 Q21

Postby vamos » Sat Jan 22, 2011 3:23 pm

Most young opera singers with demanding roles --> lose voice early

Most young singers --> strain voice

Correct answer:
(E) Most young opera singers who sing demanding roles --> strain voice

How can this inference be made? The young opera singers with demanding roles could be the few young singers that don't strain their voice.

Thanks.

The first sentence of the passage says that most of the young singers adding difficult roles lose their voice, which means that most of them are not "the few singers who don't strain their voice" but instead those that lack the proper technical training.

This still doesn't seem right to me because the first sentence says that most of the young opera singers with difficult roles lose their voice.

So, for example, we can have many young singers that are not opera singers (country music, rap, rock, etc.) which make up the majority of young singers who strain their voice, and the young opera singers could still be the group of young singers that are not included in that majority.

The first sentence says most young opera singes, the correct answer says most young opera singers.

You could try and argue that the explanation, vocal cord strain, does not necessarily apply to them, but "vocal cord strain" replaces the cause initially attributed to loss of voice for young opera singers, insufficient power.

Finally, the correct answer doesn't necessarily have to be 100% airtight, just "most strongly supported", which, given how terrible the other options are, it is.

That makes sense. I tried using formal logic on a question which involves inductive reasoning!
