Does anyone feel they should tutor now ?

Postby Sandro » Fri Jan 07, 2011 2:34 pm

I feel like I've seen so much of the lsat, I have all the prep tests/books/questions(tons of them), a score in the 95th percentile, and have been dealing with this test for almost 18 months now.

Anyone decided to go their own/craigslist and tutor on the side for some extra cash?

Sure, go for it. If you're in a major market, you might find craigslist pretty clogged with hiring scoring people, most ads I see claim 99th percentile, the big companies mostly have a 98th percentile requirement. But as long as you're not misrepresenting yourself, sounds good to me. You might find it's a fun way to earn some extra money, I really wish I had taken the LSAT when I was still a junior in college, could have made my last two years a lot less financially stressful. Tutoring is hard though, I had a lot of problem at first explaining concepts that I intuitively understood but that most people below 150 don't get. It's a good way to force yourself to understand the concepts in a more fundamental way, you'll get better yourself by teaching others.

Why not to any of the several companies that pay about double what Kaplan and TPR pay their new employees?

If profile stats are correct, I think Kaplan and TPR are the only ones that hire 169s. I know Powerscore is 173 and Testmasters is 171. TPR is 167 and Kaplan is like 164 or something.

Does the OP have a 169?

I'm pretty sure the companies go off percentiles, since the scores shift percentiles, they just market their instructors as 99th percentile or whatever. 171 is 98th now; isn't 172 99th? If so, I'm pretty sure Powerscore accepts 172+. Anyway, there's also BP and Atlas, not to mention the 50 other local companies.

It might be an interesting job but knowing how to figure things out for yourself and then trying to explain that to someone else isn't always as easy as you would think. I would lose patience with people - if I gave my best explanation and they still didn't get it I would just be like "well don't go to law school then!"

Almost positive Powerscore does not accept 172s. It is listed as 99th by LSAC, but is actually 98.6. This was pointed out to me in a thread I had in October inquiring about teaching.

It changes from administration to administration.

I applied to Powerscore just to see what would happen, since I do feel like I have more or less mastered the test by now, and I got a phone interview with their LSAT guy. But I think he could tell that I wasn't really interested in teaching LSAT classes and stuff, because I didn't hear from him again.

Does anyone know of any companies that hire tutors who are only able to teach online due to their location?

Just wanted to ask - does anyone have any tips/suggestions/experiences going the Craigslist private tutor route? I put up an ad and have a few responses. I know the test and feel I can help people, but if anyone has anything they've learned from doing it it would be greatly appreciated.
