PT@ 170+ Actual < 170

Post by t13plz » Mon Nov 08, 2010 7:32 am

This is not specific to 170+ kids.

If you PT'd at a significantly higher number than your actual test and are re-taking/considering a re-take, why did this happen?

Was it nerves? Was it harder RC/LG/LR than prior tests? Was it insufficient prep?

What are you doing to improve your score? Are you doing More PTs? Are you re-doing Pts? How do you think that this will improve your score?

This happened the last time I took the LSAT. I scored 7 pts lower than my average. For the October retake, I did all 5 section PT's (just did a few before), and for the last month, I did every section at 30 min. (27 for LR). It was the only was for me to replicate the nerves that caused my crash and burn.

PT average of 172-173, real thing 168.
I didn't simulate the test environment enough. I went with 4 section PTs, would allow myself to finish if I was on the last question and time expird, and I took too many from the comfort of home. Plus I missed 4 on LG due to time when my average was -1.

I got in the 150s the first time and I remember thinking that I would fail again. I think that mentality hurt me.

I suppose this won't work for many people since you probably can't just tune everything out, but I went the other way. During the actual test I put myself in the mindset that it was another practice. I actually forgot it was the real thing until the proctor announced a five minute warning. I got 1 point lower than my highest practice test. I also took the June one, which really helped since it's like 3 hours later than the other ones.

The first time I took the test I scored significantly lower than my PTs. It was mostly nerves, but also that I had been preparing for months (took a course/tutor) so took it easy on the prep work the few weeks before. That was a mistake.

For my retake I only started prepping 6 weeks in advance right up to test day, woke up almost every morning before work to do a practice section or two, and took PTs on the weekends. I scored right where I was averaging, which was much higher than my first score.

Averaging 172-173 on PTs. Scored 167 in Oct. Nerves caused me to miss 3 questions out of the first 10 (which happened to be a LR section, which I'm normally rock solid on). I fixed my nerves after the first section but choked on the RC. Missed 9. Don't know what happened.

Retaking in Dec.

I didn't see a huge drop in my score but TOTAL lack of sleep, meaning I didn't sleep a lick, combined to make me miss my PT highs in recent LR and LG but curiously do my best on RC, section 1. I got all of the trickier LRs right but missed the simple ones, leading me to believe the lack of sleep and worrying about my ID caused me to be off my game.

December is going down.

175 dropped to a 170 on D-Day. Brutal drop espesially since my mistakes pretty much came from the games, and the games were so easy. They were so easy that my instructor emailed me saying "those games were sooooo easy...I just did them and had time to spare. You had the 177 in the bag, you idiot."

So it was me messing up my best section. Everything else was standard. No biggie. Re-take!

I think it had to do with rushing. I thought I had less time then I had and that caused me to make careless mistakes! I was toooo urgent :P

I peed three times before I went into the room, but I took half of a 5-hour energy right before I went in. Then while the rules were being read (which took forever), I noticed I needed to pee. Then I spent the next 15 minutes deciding whether I should go at the beginning of Sec 1 or hold it. Then I considered canceling. Then I panicked. I ended up holding it for all three sections.

Scored well below my average and I had not dropped below 170 for 30 PTs. Shocker. And depressing.

Remedy: approaching prep very relaxed, redoing PTs June 07 - 61 in 3-day cycles. 2-3 section practice every day, with reduced time limits. Wearing bum-ass clothes to test center and drinking sips, LITERALLY sips the morning of. And probably taking a crap at the test center too. TMI, but who cares. Nerves + some orange juice + 5hr energy = bladder instability. Also, straight up nerves and a horrible HORRIBLE LG experimental Sec 2.

PTs were usually mid 170s, real score 168 in Oct with -8 in RC. Nerves, lack of sleep, and insufficient prep (at least for RC) all played a factor. I finished RC (section 1 for me) with more remaining time than I ever had on PTs, which leads me to believe I was a little complacent. RC has always been the least predictable section for me, although -8 was a major surprise. I'm retaking in December and I'm planning on focusing a lot of my prep on RC. Fortunately I have about 3 recent PTs that are completely untouched and probably 30 older ones which have unused RC and LR sections. I will also be redoing some of the recent PTs (including 61 ).

As long as I can get to sleep the night before I should be ok in Dec.

PT'd in 117-172 range, highest 174, got a 167 on the real thing.

I BOMBED the game section with a -8 and had a freak -5 on a LR. The games I suck at (never got less than a -3 I think), so that I kind of understand. I dont even remember the last time I had -5 on LR. Im just focusing on games, taking some PTs over (so I can get -0), and making sure Im still good to go on RC and LR. December domination on the way.

Also kind of glad I am retaking. Hopefully my nerves wont be so bad the 2nd time around.
