Should I cancel?

Postby JamesDean44 » Sun Oct 10, 2010 5:01 pm

Took the test for the first time on Saturday. My PT average is a 172, with low being 170 and high being 178. I usually go -0 to -1 on RC, -0 to -6 on both LR, and -0 to -4 on recent logic games. I usually finish each section with about 30 seconds to spare with no straight up guesses.

On test day I think I went -0 on RC. LR I had to guess on a total of 3 questions, but I am confident I only went about -2 to -5 total on the questions that I did answer. On logic games however, my nerves got the best of me and I could not complete them (after getting held up on question 1 of game 1 for way too long). I ended up having to straight up guess on 6 questions.

So, estimated wrong (not including guessed on) is -2 to -5. And a total of 9 more problems I had to guess on.

Was planning on applying for next fall, but am now considering cancelling this score and applying for the following year instead. Thoughts? Should I outright cancel and retake in December? Or not cancel and retake in December? The advantage of not canceling is the chance that the stars all align for me and that I somehow mange to score a 170 with a generous curve and lucky guessing. If I scored much lower however, then how much will a 16X score hurt my chances for next year?

i agree - while a 170 sounds much better than a 169, and most T14 schools have a 170+ mean, in reality they're not all that different. cornell/stanford/duke admissions officers came and spoke at my school last year and they said that they essentially view scores within 1-2 points as equivalent.

i think that with a 169 you have a good shot at cornell, maybe georgetown and uva as well.

cancel your score. it's not worth the significant chance that you did worse. i mean if you really guessed on a whole logic game, i'm not sure why this is even a question for you.
