got a 165 on PT17 but...(any advice?)

Postby ultrafl1ght » Mon Sep 27, 2010 9:38 pm

I took PT17 today with a silent timer and was able to score a 165 but had to take 5-10 more minutes per section as stated below:
S1 LG: -2, 6 extra minutes
S2 LR: -9, 6 extra minutes
S3 LR: -6, 9 extra minutes
S4 RC: -4, 8 extra minutes
Any advice to cut down on time but without negatively affecting accuracy? Also, do you think it would be possible to crack 170 by Oct 9th? (study advice for next two weeks?)
Thank in advance!

170 by October test? Highly unlikely.

If those are your scores with extra time and your goal is to get above 170, you should probably postpone and take it some other time. Getting above 170 and making up for that time discrepancy is hardly possible in two weeks.

you need to stick to the time limit and you need to take the most recent tests. that 165 is a good score but it may not be accurate.

yea...i was hoping to postpone till December, but anyone know how to go about that? (Deadline date?) Also, will law schools see that I decided to postpone it?

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only way to postpone now is to take a no show. It shows up on your report, but doesn't count as one of your three possible attempts.
As for speed, I really struggled with speed until I started timing individual questions and passages. I drilled quite a bit giving myself 1 minute for each LR section, and would usually practice that with the last 10 or 15 per section. Once I got accustomed to 1 minute per, I found that 35 for an entire section was comfortable.
Same thing on RC, just practice each section with 7.5 min, until you are comfortable with that constraint.
With this routine, I saw significant improvements on time in a short period. Don't know about 2 weeks though.
Worked for me in practice....

I was also wondering about that, is it safe to say pre-2004 (pre-Next 10 Actual LSATs) are easier than what should be expected for the Oct/Dec test date? If not, is there a cutoff of less accurate -> more accurate PT prediction?

the tests from the 50s onward are different from the earlier ones. not necessarily harder, just different. so do these timed under strict conditions to get a true sense of where you are. i would highly recommend taking at a later date. good luck!

This.

@OP: If you are preparing for Oct. 9th, you don't enough time to mess with older tests. Only practice on newer (50+) preptests.

Just my 2 cents...Take a PT tomorrow that is strictly timed (hopefully one of the newer ones) and see how you do. IF you're not within 2-3 points of where you want to be, you prob. won't get there in 12 days. It is too late to postpone it, so you can either no show, or do what I did and go anyway...take it, then cancel it and treat it as the best Practice Test you could take. I did this for June and spent the summer studying...I've improved 8-10 points and no longer have timing issues. You can still take December, and it won't hurt ya too much this cycle. What you don't want to do is be stuck with a score that schools see b/c you weren't prepared. Good luck mate :)

Thanks for your input, yea I've accepted that I probably won't reach my expectations by Oct definitely aiming for Dec. Only thing is that applying mid-January (after scores sent) is quite late in the cycle, aren't most acceptances sent out by then, not to mention scholarship money?

Also, LSAC states that Dec scores are available via email Jan 10, does anyone know if that is the initial date or release, or is there possibility that they may send it out earlier? (few days? week?)
