PT 20, Sect. 1, Q #18

Post by gerbil26 » Mon Aug 30, 2010 6:33 pm

Maybe I'm being completely oblivious (and that happens sometimes, especially since I'm completely isolated in my studying) but I can't figure out why C is the right answer. And its eating at me. Thanks.

The paradox here is that an increase in avg. daily temperature and humidity is usually associated with increased crop yields and in the next century, it is expected that both will rise. Yet, crop yields are predicted to decrease. So the question is: is there something other factor that will offset the increase in crop yield normally associated with rising temperatures and humidity?

C is correct because it provides an explanation of the paradox. Currently, the temperature is cool and dry enough so that insect pests are unable to establish themselves in the region. Once daily temperatures and humidity rise, these insects will be able to establish themselves, which explains why crop yields are predicted to fall.
