Re: PT 31 Section 2 # 18

Stim:

Works of art <-some-> represent something -> relevant to aesthetic experience -> dependent upon context

Conclusion:

- Way of knowing if context-depending criteria is present -> - Clear criteria for determining whether an object is art.

The issue is that something not having context does not necessarily mean that it is not a work of art. Only SOME works of art represent something, and the stimulus covers only those works of art that DO represent something. So, the question you should be asking is, what about those works of art that DO NOT represent something? Perhaps they have other non-representational aesthetic properties that can distinguish them as art. The argument thus makes an unnecessarily broad statement about identifying works of art based on a description of only a subset of art.

This flaw is described by (C).
